AX Is The Priciest Of Anime Conventions

Not the greatest news to hear. But, at the same time it is the largest anime convention in the US and has the most content. Would it be sweeter if it was cheaper, Hell yes.

And, always remember, L.A. Live is a pit of scum and villainy and food costing more than it's worth. Frankly, the food at the convention center sucks too. If you can wait and eat outside of the area do it or bring bento boxes/lunch. Bring re-usable water bottles. Water was $8 a bottle last year. F the convention center.

Palm Springs ShortFest 2026: Late Night

 By Jonathan Bilski

Welcome! Can you hold it in? Because in Don't Puke our main character could not and we go to experience it all in first person like a VR Drunk Simulator. Did it set the tone for the night? No, that would be the child murder and organ harvesting in What Are Grandchildren Made Of ? Late Night is its own animal of weird, gross and comedy sketch that goes all the way there. And, we dived right into some weird and heartfelt stuff.

Q&A after with some of the directors/crew
One such heartfelt film i have a animated/directed by Rory Waudby-Tolley starts off as a casual listing rap of what the animator has. It slowly divulges into what he doesn't have. And, does it even matter in the long run? Another, much more dour animation, What We Leave Behind, shares a story of rape within a youth hockey league.

We leave that shocking animation for more over-the-top works with CGI feats for the eyes that make them hurt like Um about a creation myth story about bird people and MANTIS STREAM! LIKE & SUBSCRIBE which was on par with Don't Puke on making the audience want to vomit. It, like the previous nights horror block, took swings at current social media. A marriage proposal goes utterly wrong on stream. And it keeps, getting worse for the guy who proposed. Also, weird to see another praying mantis short after that other animated short simply titled Praying Mantis from the Thrills & Chills block.

Deuce Purgatory by Sydney Adams might have been the closes to a "normal" comedy sketch with an utterly terrible tennis player named Shelly and her sucking at a mixed doubles tennis match. There's blood, a talking trophy with long hair and dream sequences far too often. And, a car that needs to be put out of it's misery by the end of the short. Everything about the short makes me think there should be a sketch show featuring the people in and behind it.

What set it apart was not only how funny it was, but the effort put in. The ending credits and title screen have a 16-bit theme. The even made cute chibi 16-bit versions of the cast an animated them for the ending. And, a self -worth achievement. That's a lot of work for a short.

Deuce Purgatory came together thanks to Palm Springs ShortFest. People saw the work of the director three years prior and tapped her to make this new short.

Palm Springs ShortFest 2026: Thrills & Chills

By Jonathan Bilski

A packed festival theaters had Palm Springs ready to get it's spook on with a seven story collection of horror for the Thrills & Chills block for Palm Springs ShortFest 2026. Each film had the ladies on either side of me looking away or going "Oh no." All together they made us laugh, cringe and threw a good chunk of sexuality at us.

On that, the film that was on everyone's lips as we were leaving was Scissors by Hannah Alline. This horror short flipped the slasher trope of a redneck man hunting a group of woman in a cabin in the woods to a group of very well prepared lesbians hunting said redneck. With plenty of humor, non-stop lesbian jokes and possibly the best scissoring joke in a horror movie, it was the crowd favorite.

Both Imago & The End is at Hand surprised the audience with the level of creature work. These effects kicked too much butt and really grossed us out. Didn't expect Jordan Peele's named attached as producer to the Imago short about a young woman dealing with a Mom going let's say, kafkaesque. Or the grossest phone repair with some living creature coming out of it in The End is at Hand. Why does it have leave so much slime and why must a smart phone bleed?

What's sure to last as a disturbing nightmare for the audience; with more bug related horror, is the fully animated Praying Mantis that looks like a Japanese OVA lost from the 80's. Though, it's a Taiwan/Hong Kong production finished in 2025. Disturbing bug eating people action anyone?

The directors and some of the crew behind OBEY!, Scissors and The End is at Hand got up for a Q&A afterward.

What was clear,  was the each work had a theme behind it and just wasn't made for the sake of... it looks cool. From the Q&A we learned: OBEY! was made to satirize the brain rot we get from all the social media in-take of pet/baby celebs and how bad it is behind the scenes. This was done with a ghost dog back for revenge against it's Dog Mom. Scissors was made to share a different view of the lesbian community and empower the would be prey of a horror film. And, The End is at Hand showcased a grim and utter disgusting look on our use of phone use. Where the phone eventually uses us...or at least the worm living in it uses us for food.

Every film got a nice scare out of the crowd and you could see some of these directors going on to make some longer scarier or comical projects.

LACMA's The Art Parade & Christian Marclay’s The Clock Returns

Did you check out LACMA's "The Art Parade" with over 1,000  participants in it? It took place on June 20th right underneath LACMA. Remember, it hangs over the street now.  If you liked any of the crazy projects going on through check out this guide of all of them.

And, Christian Marclay’s The Clock returns to LACMA Saturday, July 25, 7 pm, through Sunday, July 26, 7 pm. It's been over a decade already, since, it was in LA.

The amazing piece of work might be on par with getting into the Criterion Closet for a cinephile. Having logged in check it out for a few minutes or as long as it can grab your attention. Christian Marclay’s The Clock depicts time ( in real time) from clips of cinema and television. Thousands of clips showcase time accurately as though you were checking your watch. And, it's not available online.

Now, LACMA is only staying open 24 hours twice during this run. So, some clips will be harder to see and apparently it never repeats itself in that 24 hour cycle which is kind of insane.

It's costing you the same as admission to the museum and on top of that reservation don't mean jack as it's a first come, first served situation. You'll be in a faster line with membership, but if someone can seat watching all the clock clips they won't be ask to leave.

You can get more details on it here.

Space Shuttle Endeavour Finally Upright This November

The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will have the Space Shuttle Endeavour upright this November, ready to launch into our hearts and inspire younger writers to have scenes set around shuttle launches. As a set piece and just a place to learn it'll be amazing when it opens at the California Science Center November 13th, this year.

Other than the amazing sight of the shuttle in the position to blast off ( 20 stories high)  the space center will feature:

-    A 140-foot ascent aboard a gantry-style elevator along the shuttle stack, evoking the experience of astronauts preparing for launch.

 -   The Shuttle Descent Slide drops 45 feet in elevation down a 115-foot-long tubular slide that represents the shuttle’s landing. Guests will see bright orange light representing the plasma that glows as a shuttle re-enters the atmosphere and hear a double boom that evokes the sound of the nose and tail as each breaks the sound barrier on return to Earth.

-    The opportunity to sit inside a replica flight deck and interact with joysticks, switches, lights, buttons and pedals like those that the shuttle commander and pilot would operate.

- A diverse collection of 100 artifacts, including rare and historic aerospace objects, as well as 100 new hands-on exhibits, featuring interactive experiences focused on science and engineering.

Little Tokyo Is Jam Packed During Anime Expo 2026

It's not only a shuttle stop and a nice place to stay for AX. No, this year, Little Tokyo is jam-packed with way too much going on. In year's past Little Tokyo has tried to capture people's attention and a least their wallets with a place to chill and eat after a full day of AX. Now, it seems like it's trying to be an expansion of AX itself. Below, will be listing everything going on in Little Tokyo around AX and beyond.

LA Anime Artist Alley
Jul 4 -5 12:00pm — 7:00pm
411 S Hewitt St, Los Angeles, CA 90013
Free entry, No AX badge required
Partiful evite

It look like some artists are coming together for an outside Artist Alley. Los Angeles Anime Artist Alley is not officially connected to AX, but is happening the same weekend. And, they're really trying to get across it's free entry with no badge required. 60+ artists as of writing this.

Check out their social media to see if you're interested or if you couldn't get into AX; it's a pretty nice alternative.

Technically, it's in the Arts District, just walking distance from Little Tokyo.

Not far from LA Anime Artist Alley is this special exhibit below.

July 2 – 26, 2026
Open daily from 12:00 PM–7:00 PM
Art Share L.A. 801 E 4th Place, Los Angeles, CA 90013
General Admission: $20
Exhibition-Exclusive Plate (Add-On) : $25 (Limited)

The exhibit on the edge of Little Tokyo, it's in the Arts District as well, will feature art from the creator of Delicious in Dungeon, Ryoko Kui, special photo spots for you to grab selfies at and plenty of fake fantasy dishes to take photos of. Monsters, props, weapons and more are promised.

You get a free postcard with your visit (there's one of eight to collect) and if you want to add an extra $25 get an exclusive plate featuring the characters from the manga/anime. Oh, and exclusive merch from Japan and for the exhibit will be available for purchase.

The exhibit is sticking around after AX for almost the whole month. So, don't worry if you miss it AX weekend.

But, wait there's more!

Special for AX are Dungeon Quests

Dungeon Quest #1: Stamp Rally

Step 1: Begin your journey by finding a stamp sheet and collecting your first stamp either at:

The Kadokawa booth at Anime Expo (SH-2720), or

Kinokuniya Little Tokyo for visitors not attending Anime Expo.

Step 2: Bring your stamp sheet to the Ryoko Kui Exhibition & "Delicious in Dungeon" Exhibition and collect your second and final stamp at the Merchandise Counter.

Quest Complete: Once both stamps have been collected, adventurers can claim their quest reward at the Merchandise Counter.

Dungeon Quest #2: Share Your Adventure

Visitors can also earn a reward by sharing their exhibition experience on social media using #DeliciousinDungeonLA.

Whether you're enjoying Senshi's cooking, encountering a dungeon monster, exploring the exhibits, or discovering your favorite part of the exhibition, simply post your adventure on any platform and show it to our staff at the Merchandise Counter to complete the quest and receive your reward.

After going to the exhibit you might be hungry. Why not try the brand new Square Enix Cafe and Shop?

Grand Opening will be June 27th
Mon-Sun 11:30am-9:00pm
316 E 1st St., Los Angeles, California 90012
Price varies by meal, recommend making reservations

The new cafe is up and running as of writing this, but is still in soft opening mode until Saturday, June 27th. Right now, you can grab a specialty menu featuring characters from various Square games and media and munch and drink them down. Quite the colorful collection of food, hope it comes out the other end, okay. Check out the menu. They also have quite the collection of merch to purchase too. We haven't heard of any special deals for AX, but here's hoping.

It's not a pop-up, it's sticking around as best we know.

Not sticking around is the blue blur himself and the synonymous game company he's from.

Everyday from 12pm-7pm until July 19
319 E 2nd St Los Angeles, CA 90012

This pop-up has already being going and won't even finish at the end of July. So, if you love Sonic or other SEGA properties you might want to stop by and grab special merch. They seem to have special items per week, like exclusive shirts. Oh,this includes ATLUS merch for all you Persona people.

And, for one of the more enticing pop-ups is the Kodansha House one. They're a major manga publisher behind some top tier favorite series like Ghost in the Shell. They have a very special pop-up this year.

July 2 – 12, 2026
701 E 3rd Street
Los Angeles, CA 90013
Story World & Clubhouse 11 am – 9 pm
July 4 & 5 The Clubhouse will close at 5 pm
Story World open regular hours
Free, no AX badge required

From the their site:

"Fans this year will enter a portal that takes them into a dynamic, interactive space to connect with and celebrate the impossible stories they have come to love. They can then spend their time more leisurely with friends, as well as meeting new ones, while hanging out in a manga gallery, cafe, lounge, and library.

With daily programming to include manga creator appearances, anime screenings, panel discussions, and more, Kodansha House is the perfect pop-up for manga enthusiasts, both new and seasoned, to mingle and dive deeper into the magic of manga."

With reading lounge we thought they were going to team up with an old friend. Though, that doesn't seem to be the case so far.

Dazzling, hand-painted watercolor animation brings Gabrielle Vincent’s Belgian children’s books to life in this Oscar-nominated gem. In a world sharply divided by fear between bears, who live above, and mice, who live below, an unlikely bond blooms between a grumpy, music-loving bear and a spirited little mouse with big dreams. Mutual need brings them together but a shared love of creativity and fun connects them in a story about how friendship can change the world.—Senior Public Programmer Paul Malcolm
