Anime Hype: Riverside, Evan Palmer Daily Dragon Ball, Dandadan & Sakamoto Days Animes & More Dragon Ball Saprking Zero Fighters

A prelude to Anime Expo, start off Summer with Anime Riverside, June 1st & 2nd at the Riverside Convention Center.

As we've said before, we went last last year and we were impressed by how the event takes over downtown Riverside. Cosplayers, otaku and plenty of merch stretch out all over the city. And, we really liked the anime themed wrestling.

Check out Panels here. There's quite a good amount of them.

Evan Palmer is an artist and has started watching Dragon Ball. Since April 5th he's been putting out a Daily Dragon Ball image based on the episode he watched of the original series. And, gosh darn it it's cute. I started re-watching Dragon Ball because of it. His latest art is based on the Dr. Slump crossover, a much sillier series also created by Akira Toriyama.

An anime we're looking forward to...and you should too, is being split like Urusei Yatsura into a two course season. That means, that even though when it's done airing all episodes will count as Season 1. It's...kind of annoying as that means we won't get all episodes one after another and might have to wait a few months for more. But it could mean their taking their time at animation Science Saru to put everything out with quality.

And if it is low quality after having more time, feel free to go after Science Saru online, they had more time to make it better.

The anime comes out this October.

Mondo Tokyo: Dispatches from a Secret Japan by Patrick Macias recently came out. We've been reading Macias' work for a long time and you might like getting caught up with his experience as probably one of the last anime/ Japanese culture writers still going. He's also in charge of Otaku USA, the last published anime magazine in the US.

Blurb from Amazon on the book.

"Tokyo, in the early aughts, was a weird place. Lonely single men wanted to marry action figures instead of women. High school girls worked at maid cafes and were paid to act like Manga characters. Nightclubs filled with kids in anime cosplay who danced to remixed versions of cartoon theme songs.

People’s private obsessions, once confined to bedrooms and computer screens, were transforming entire city blocks.

Long before global media, Pharrell Williams, and millions of tourists twigged to the strange new energy emerging from Japan, author Patrick Macias was there, chronicling the emergence of “Cool Japan” in a famous blog entitled “An Eternal Thought in the Mind of Godzilla.” Now with biting humor and cultural insight, he looks back on the trends, personalities, and happenings that dominated the bleeding edge of Japanese pop culture in those years. You’ll meet maids who imitate Michael Jackson, anime producers sent to prison for guns and drugs, school girls determined to resurrect surf rock, nightclubbers who worship “uncool foreigners,” and all manner of wide-eyed ex-pats, weirdoes, and dreamers who came to Tokyo in search of a stranger, more surreal version of life."

The very much loved manga is getting an anime this January, early next year, 2025. What happens after the world's great assassin retires? He gets fat and runs and convenience store, of course!

Oh yeah, we have the fusions to fight each other!

Part of the series What is a Western? Film Series
Saturday, June 1, 2024, 1:30 p.m.

Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Wild Wild West, an iconic steampunk Western which showcases Will Smith and Kevin Kline as two U.S. Secret Service agents working together to protect U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant and the United States from a variety of dangerous threats.

This film is a bombastic romp that highlights the fictional role of a leading African American cowboy and takes audiences on a winding trip through the American West. It also conveys how 90s cinema portrayed the contributions of Black cowboys to the West and is an important predecessor to Black Westerns of today.

'Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair - Year 3'
Sat. Jun 1 - Fri. Jun 7, 2024
Aero Theatre, Egyptian Theatre and Los Feliz 3

What's so crazy about this one is that so many directors are coming to show off their utterly depressing work. And, it's really all crammed into one week.

In-person guests include: Jerry Schatzberg, Al Pacino, Kenneth Lonergan, Lynne Ramsay, Charlie Kaufman, Lynne Littman, Elliott Gould, Michael Rooker, Allen Hughes, Bernard Rose, Karyn Kusama, Steve De Jarnatt, Phil Hay, Matt Manfredi and Don Hertzfeldt

We're giving you a heads up, because we can see some of these have sold out and because, once again, we love the concept.

We say go deeper and have tissues packs with the Bleak Week logo on them.

Maybe a showing of The End of Evangelion, we're not seeing much Japanese love. And, boy, do they know how to communicate messed-up sadness.

Last Remaining Seats (June1-15, special theaters) returns to remind us to check out the classic theaters around LA we should still be using more. We have so many amazing places to watch movies that we under-utilize. The full schedule is up and lets you choose from only a six-movie selection. So, pick something as you don't have many chances to see these films on the big screen or in one of these  classic LA theaters.

Anime Riverside, June 1st & 2nd at the Riverside Convention Center is kicking off next month and they have so many voice actors from heavy hitter animes. It might be a good chance to prep for Anime Expo in July too.

As we've said before, we went last last year and we were impressed by how the event takes over downtown Riverside. Cosplayers, otaku and plenty of merch stretch out all over the city. And, we really liked the anime themed wrestling.

Check out Panels here. There's quite a good amount of them.

We'll give you updates with less than weeks to go till this one starts up.

Horror Hype: In a Violent Nature & Return to Silent Hill?

We've been waiting on this one and hearing the hype. A slasher film that's insanely brutal, on the level of Terrifier, but also artistic and artsy, count us in. The premise is you're with the undead slasher the whole time; so from a third person point-of-view you follow him as he comes back to life and goes after a new crop of stupid teenagers.

There's no pause, you just stay with the brutal killer has he transverses nature and cinema...woah.

The hype has come from film festvals, like Sundance and critic reviews being quite positive.

And, then you have Steven Kostanski helping on the film. He's the director of some of our favorite horror films/messed-up movies like PG Psycho Goreman and The Void.

It'll be out in theaters May 31st, but then it'll be on Shudder some time later this year.

Then, the strangest news was hearing a sequel to first Silent Hill movie was being made from the original director Christophe Gans. It's based on Silent Hill 2 game. We really like the first film and like most people don't want to remember the sequel he didn't direct.

No date on when it's coming out.

Also weird, is Drew Carey is a co-host of the event?

"Perennial midnight fare at repertory theaters around the country to this day, Ōbayashi Nobuhiko’s indescribable psychedelic horror flick was first brought to the attention of the Criterion Collection, who, through their theatrical arm, Janus Films, brought it to the IFC Center in New York, where it had a sustained midnight engagement beginning in 2010 that continues to this day. House’s breakneck pacing, whiplash tone, and unpredictable plot about seven Japanese schoolgirls who visit an aunt in the countryside only to find her home infested with a supernatural presence is, as anyone who has seen it will insist, a singular cinematic experience."
