Halloween Heads Up: They Follow, Haunted Little Tokyo, Aero Horrothon, I'm A Werewolf & More

Here's a roundup of horror news & bits that got us excited.

Shibuya Unveils Graphics Discouraging Halloween Parties in Their Ward

Japan’s Jimi ‘Mundane’ Halloween Costumes of 2023

One of our favorite Halloween posts of the year, the annual mundane costume contest from Japan.

Knott’s Berry Farm offering ‘scare immunity’ necklace for Halloween event

Love this insane opinion piece on the new no scare necklace at Knott's Scary Farm

Opinion: Knott’s Scary Farm 'No Boo!' Necklaces Suck the Spirit Out of Halloween

"When will the madness end? Will poltergeists become "polite-tergeists," required to ensure that all their ectoplasmic actions are carried out with proper consent?"

*Not sure if the person who wrote the piece read that immunity necklace is only good outside the mazes.

You know, thinking about, I'm pretty sure Jeff Rabhan hasn't even gone to Knott's Scary Farm as The Hanging: Uncancelled Show has been there for this Halloween and it's so anti-woke he would love it. The level of cringe humor here is at an all time high.

Screaming, We Mean Streaming Horror: Five Nights At Freddy's, V/H/S/85, Totally Killer & More

Had the annual Horrothon for the TTDILA crew over the weekend and have to say all of the films in this post are perfect viewing for Halloween. All are avaible online for streaming via their respective streaming services, which you probably have at least one of.

Freddy's is best with a group of friends. The animatronic robot monsters were made by none other than the Jim Henson Creature Shop, so they look super frightening in every scene. Didn't care for the lead actor, but he's not why were watching it. It's for Freddy and his friends.

85 and Totally Killer also work if you want some dark laughs with your scares. Both capture the spirit of the 80's perfectly.

If you want some pure misery horror that doesn't go easy, there's also When Evil Lurks. It's a slow, brutal affair. Not fun for parties.

Gotta mention Talk To Me & No One Will Save You as great new horror releases you might want to see by yourself if in the scary mood.

And, finally a reminder to check out last year's favorite Deadstream. Mocking how far we've gone with streamer culture.

After receiving a string of unsettling letters from her father, Arletty arrives in a sleepy California coastal town called Point Dume. Dad is nowhere to be seen. Instead, Arletty finds a town full of drugged-out burnouts, barren shopping centers, and... something else. Echoing everything from Herk Harvey's CARNIVAL OF SOULS to Mario Bava's KILL, BABY... KILL!, MESSIAH OF EVIL is a swirling vortex of Lovecraftian terror, analog synth attacks, and grisly bloodshed from the team who'd later go on to make HOWARD THE DUCK. Marianna Hill (HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER), Michael Greer (FORTUNE AND MEN'S EYES), and Elisha Cook Jr. (THE MALTESE FALCON) star in this unjustly overlooked major work of independent American horror that's primed for (re)discovery.

IT'S A WONDERFUL KNIFE
Special IMAX Screening

Deck the halls with boughs of holly… and terror! Director Tyler MacIntyre and genre-fave scribe Michael Kennedy bring to life an entirely new take on a yuletide classic in It's a Wonderful Knife. Funny, smart, heartfelt AND utterly bloody, this destined-to-be a holiday classic stars Jane Widdop as Winnie Carruthers, who finds her life even more complicated when she stops the rampage of a local serial killer. When things do not work out as planned, Winnie wishes she’d never been born and finds herself thrust into a different reality and… well, you may think you know the rest, but trust us when we say this brilliant slasher plays with all expectations.

Vampire Flyer

Here's an old one. It's a vampire Flyer you can print out and put up places. Just a fun little decoration for Halloween. You can always play around with it and make it your own, maybe for a blood drive?

Streaky Is Back

Streaky is back in Power Girl #2. For those who don't read comics or know the mythos, Streaky is a super-powered cat with a streak on him or her and usually the pet of Supergirl or Powergirl. He usually has similar powers to Superman, but just like Krypto is a friendly and heroic super pet. Because of so many reboots and different timelines I haven't seen the furball in a minute. In any case, he's back with a vengeance and angry he isn't getting enough attention. I love comics.

I love he's just using laser vision in the background and neither of the heroes bat an eye.

Halloween Hype: What To Do This Week & Weekend

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS FESTIVAL
OCTOBER 25 THRU NOVEMBER 2, 2023
Olvera Street

For over 35 years, the merchants on Olvera Street have celebrated Dia de los Muertos. The celebration has evolved to incorporate the pre-Columbian, Aztec, Mayan and Catholic rituals surrounding death. Each night, a vibrant and colorful procession sets the stage for our ceremony.

Dia de los Muertos is, in fact, a celebration of life – it is not a time to mourn our loved ones, rather it is a time to remember the lives they lead and the many things they enjoyed during that life. Death is a part of life, and so we honor it. Dia de los Muertos at Olvera Street is the only celebration of its kind in Los Angeles – A nine (9) day festival, with a nightly procession, community altars on display, and entertainment.

For the first time in her practice, Judy Baca transforms a museum into a studio. She and artists from the Social and Public Art Resource Center expand The Great Wall of Los Angeles into the 21st century, painting two sections of the mural at LACMA. LACMA’s exhibition presents murals from the 1960s depicting the Chicano Movement, Watts Renaissance, and archival materials that have never been exhibited, revealing Baca’s process and innovations to muralism. Baca conceived The Great Wall (1975) as a monument to the people of California, featuring moments from prehistoric times to the 1950s. She collaborated with 400 youth and community members to design and paint the mural on the walls of the L.A. River to tell history from the perspective of those erased from it. After the artists complete the paintings at LACMA, they will add them to The Great Wall, creating a mile of visual history.
