Midnight Mahjong at Anime Expo is back for it's 5th year! Join us for some casual mahjong at a funny location. Tentatively located at the stairs between West Hall and the Entertainment Area. Nights 1, 2, and 3 from 11:30pmish to whenever. We hope to see you there!🀄 pic.twitter.com/OPIGpiLsgp

What was supposed to be the 5th small get-together for an off-the-books mahjong game became a huge turn-out with limited panels and activities at night at Anime Expo 2026. Midnight Mahjong has been its namesake just outside the LA Convention Center. A few con-goers wanting to game and hang after hours around AX. However, this year saw the simple event where people might play games together and watch anime into something quite large.

It's the last night of AX 2026 and watching midnight mahjong become what it is now is unprecedented and crazy it's become a highlight of many people's night. We're now in its 5th year. Year 1~4 in the next post. pic.twitter.com/M6B8MO342C

There were some apparent problems with allegedly one jerk taking pics up ladies skirts. Reports tell one of the ladies grabbing his phone and it now being in the police's hands.
It's not an official event of AX, but we'll have to see with the numbers and some bad eggs if it'll have to be given it's own area or told to stop.
On a lighter note, someone cosplayed an iconic scene from the popular anime Evangelion, where Shinki Ikari is slouched in his chair. Fans loved the nod to the depressing character's sad moment by dropping money by his feet. In a nice gesture the cosplayer is donating all the loot to charity for mental illness, which makes sense if you ever watch Evangelion.

The greatest comment we saw on social media was:
"Why didn't everyone just start clapping around him saying, "Congratulations!"
