In this edition of ‘Watch Local,’ the American Cinematheque pays homage to the Hollywood Center Motel, the iconic bungalow-turned-motel-turned-film-set that burned in a fire earlier this year. Built in 1905, before Hollywood was Hollywood, the architectural gem stood for 120 years, evolving with the city of Los Angeles as it transformed from a sleepy retirement community to the center of American film and television production. The mid-century modern Motel, with its kidney-shaped pool and breeze-block court, represented a uniquely Angeleno sensibility of sleaze-with-style, immortalized forever in movies like L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, FUN WITH DICK AND JANE and HIT MAN along with TV programs like PERRY MASON and THE ROCKFORD FILES.

Right in the Eye (En plein dans l’œil) is a multimedia show and live movie-concert composed of 12 films by Georges Méliès, a pioneer of the Cinema and a wizard of special effects. On stage, three virtuoso musicians play some fifty different instruments, including rare and unique ones, breathing fresh impetus into these cinematographic gems. In a subtly-staged setting, in perfect symbiosis with the imagery, the musicians transport us in an inventive production, performed both onstage and onscreen, that reflects the creative genius of Méliès.

HAMMER MUSEUM
10899 Wilshire Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA
90024
Free for good

Made in L.A. 2025 is the seventh iteration of the Hammer’s signature biennial exhibition that showcases artists practicing throughout the greater Los Angeles area. The 28 participants in the exhibition present work not only made in the city but also grounded in its complex and unfolding terrain. Neither myth nor monolith, Los Angeles is many things to many people, and its dissonance is perhaps its most distinguishing feature. The works presented in this year’s biennial include film, painting, theater, choreography, photography, sculpture, sound, and video. Attitude draws them together: Each engages with this city in ways alternately literal, formal, material, and metaphoric. Conceived or made in Los Angeles, they are of this city and nowhere else.
