The Trouble With Ghosts explores what is so conceptually and figuratively unsettling about the ghost and the media that host it. The series is an attempt to understand the politics of ghosting in an age that is so preoccupied with specters (past, present and future).

A vampire hunter known as Blade (Wesley Snipes) uses his superhuman abilities to protect humanity from neck-biting undead under the guidance of mentor Abraham Whistler (Kris Kristofferson). The half-undead, half-human daywalker also seeks revenge for his mother’s murder at the hands of a vampire during her pregnancy. Based on the comic book series of the same name, Blade was the first film produced by Marvel Studios. An unexpected box-office success, the film helped pave the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Snipes’s undeniable charisma as the leather-clad slayer and his decades of training in martial arts helped cement the character’s place in pop culture.

The stars (Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee), screenwriter (Jimmy Sangster), and director (Terence Fisher) of Hammer Films’ 1957 breakout hit The Curse of Frankenstein reunited for this exciting adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Cushing brought subtlety and intelligence to the character of Dr. Van Helsing, which he would play four more times for Hammer, and Lee’s quietly charismatic portrayal of the Count (a role he would reprise in six sequels) made him one of the most iconic interpreters of the role. With its bold Technicolor cinematography by Jack Asher and the thunderous orchestral score by Hammer regular James Bernard, the film helped establish the studio as a brand name in big-screen horror.

Sarah Bailey (Robin Tunney), a teen with a troubled past, moves to Los Angeles with her parents for a fresh start. Upon arrival in a Catholic school, Sarah is introduced to Bonnie (Neve Campbell), Rochelle (Rachel True), and Nancy (Fairuza Balk), a clique of outsiders rumored to practice witchcraft. Born a natural witch herself, Sarah is welcomed to the group, completing their coven. Together they invoke the ancient spirit of Manon, a pagan deity. Critically panned upon release, the film has since gained a cult following for its fierce, defiant portrayal of sisterhood, female agency, and rage, resonating with independent spirits, outcasts, and, as Balk so proudly puts it onscreen, “the weirdos, mister.”

The haunting tale of a scholar, tempted by the Devil to sign away his soul in exchange for universal knowledge, has been a resonant cultural motif across five centuries. If the essential literary text for the Faustian myth is Johan Wolfgang von Goethe’s 19th century poetic drama, its cinematic equivalent is F. W. Murnau’s visionary 1926 silent adaptation, a masterpiece of haunting visual design that explores rich themes of morality and materialism.
