Weekly What To Do: Animation Is As Animation Does

The BFF aka The BINGE Fringe Festival of Free Theatre - the ELEVENTH annual Santa Monica Fringe Festival - features artists, companies and performances by Santa Monica and Los Angeles based artists.
BFF 2026
Tuesday, October 13 to Friday, November 20, 2026

Productions and workshops from the festival touch on a diverse range of subjects from political to personal, love to loss, sensuality to spiritual, hierarchy to hope.
All bets are off, limits on boundaries and form wide open, with shows that range in style from classic comedy to poignant drama, from Shakespearian to one-woman-shows, from slam poetry to stand-up comedy and improv, from parody to fairytale - something for everyone - and all events are free to the public.

Fractais Tropicais (Tropical Fractals) depicts environmental collapse and a vision of the post-apocalyptic world. On an interstellar journey, an intelligent system named Museo records the crew’s diaries as Brazilian archivists transport Earth’s last living remnants and their digitized copies. This fractured history of humanity is contrasted with a lone wanderer, perhaps the last man on Earth (played by Ivo Müller), who roams the ruined landscape as it slowly recovers. Shot in Super 16mm, the debut feature film by Leonardo Pirondi (CalArts BFA 22 + MFA 24 in Film and Video) crafts a textured analog visual world in contrast to slick, digitally rendered science fiction visual tropes.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Leonardo Pirondi and Ivo Müller moderated by Jheanelle Brown.
