Weekly What To Do: Herbie Hancock, John Williams, K-Pop Demon Hunters My Top Three Musical Artists

Wed, Aug 20, 2025
5:00 pm- 8:00 pm
TWCCC & James Irvine Japanese Garden
244 S. San Pedro Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012
Admission: $5.00 (includes fees & otoshi)
This event is 21 +.

Inspired by the Japanese izakaya, an informal place to gather, drink, and share small plates, we invite you to sip Japanese spirits and beers either indoors or outdoors in a private Japanese garden, while DJ Korean Abdul Jabbar sets the vibe with city pop and mid-tempo grooves.  Enjoy seasonal small bites curated by JACCC Chef Gary Matsumoto, crafted to capture the relaxed, communal spirit of izakaya culture. In true izakaya tradition, you’ll also receive an otoshi, a small appetizer served as a welcoming gesture to start your experience.

Chill is the first edition of a new seasonal series — an easygoing night to gather, drink, and unwind in one of Little Tokyo’s best-kept secrets.

Whether he’s collaborating with the Los Angeles Philharmonic as Creative Chair for Jazz or dialing in outer-space sounds on his keytar, Herbie Hancock is always on the move. Since making a splash with the Chicago Symphony at the age of 11 – when he played the soloist’s role for a Mozart piano concerto – and winding through his time as a member of Miles Davis’ legendary Second Great Quintet, he has become one of the most revered and innovative musicians in jazz history.

Lucha VaVoom de La Liz (LVVDLL)—the perfect combination of world-class, professional lucha libre-style wrestling interspersed with insane, high-octane burlesque performances, death-defying aerial acts, comedy, music, and more—is returning with their annual summer spectacular show.

Last month, LVVDLL’s beloved home venue The Mayan Theatre, a pioneer of downtown Los Angeles’ revitalization and a beloved cultural landmark that has served as a cornerstone of entertainment and community in DTLA for nearly a century, announced it will be closing its doors in September. The closure marks the end of an era, so LVVDLL is promising one last blowout in celebration of the venue they’ve called home for 23 years, before they find a new home to host their annual Halloween engagement.

Art Deco, as the new modern style came to be known, was characterized by bold, symmetrical patterns, elongated forms and solid materials. The look found its way into the movies early on. In films such as Fritz Lang’s science fiction dystopia Metropolis (1927) and the Jazz Age Joan Crawford vehicle Our Dancing Daughters (1928), art directors and costume designers mobilized the streamlined elegance of the Art Deco look to evoke both the optimism and anxiety of the day.

Disco Godfather in 35mm
Sat, Aug 23, 2025 | 2:30pm | 35mm
Ted Mann Theater
Rudy Ray Moore is the Disco Godfather, a retired cop who runs a discotheque where he can be found in shiny, deep V-neck outfits and faux eyelashes as he hypes the crowd with his irresistible charm. This offbeat Blaxploitation feature follows the journey of Tucker Williams (Moore) as he traces some drug dealers after his cousin, Bucky (Julius J. Carry III), starts “tripping” on angel dust and is hospitalized. The anti-drug plot unfolds under the waves of a disco-infused soundtrack with exuberant visuals, mashed with kung-fu action. Disco Godfather may not offer much clarity, but it does promise an amazing—and sincerely weird—time at the movies.

This showcase explores how astronomy and image‑making have shaped one another from the 19th century to the present-day. Beginning with Jules Janssen’s 1874 Passage of Venus—photographs he called “drawn by the sun itself”—the program traces how telescopes, cameras, and later computers turned observations into scientific data and cinematic art. From Bernard Lyot’s solar footage to Carl Sagan’s Cosmos, these films reveal how techniques from sequential photography to digital simulation have transformed how we see, teach, and imagine the universe. Curated by Jane de Almeida, Adam Hyman, Jheanelle Brown.
