Beyond Fest 2025 Schedule Up
Holy cr@p, we thought the Del Toro movies might have been it, but we were dead wrong. A huge selection of amazing new movies are up for this year's Beyond Fest. As of writing this, we even saw tickets still available for the breakout martial arts film The Furious from TIFF. It's making its US premiere at Beyond Fest. Black Phone 2, V/H/S/ Halloween, Exit 8 and Good Boy are up to see! Plus a number of special cult screenings and remastered goodies. Grab tickets as fast as you can!

Sharon Chohi Kim premieres a performance inspired by murmurations—meaning both spontaneous flocks of starlings and a collection of low, continuous sounds. Drawing on the intelligence of decentralized and adaptive systems in nature—such as mushroom spores and moss—this performance is a meditation on shape-shifting and collective intelligence. Bodies resonate in a responsive negotiation of sound and movement, while film and video projections designed by Jennifer Bewerse layered throughout the theater evoke the textures and behaviors of organic systems. Both composing and performing in the work, Kim remixes live, soaring vocals with electronics, accompanied by choreography by Stephanie Zaletel.

Retired pugilist Bernard “Bang Bang” Rozyski (Tim Blake Nelson) is inspired to try his hand at training once he reconnects with his estranged grandson. While their training brings Bang Bang out of the hole he’s been living in, everyone questions his motivations – including an ex-girlfriend from decades ago who was privy to Bang Bang’s meteoric rise in the sport in the 80s as well as the rivalry with his former opponent, her cousin and Detroit’s Mayoral candidate Darnell Washington. Is Bang Bang merely passing down inherited rage, or is there true altruism behind his tutelage?

Born in El Salvador, Maravilla fled the country at the age of eight as an unaccompanied minor to escape the violence of the twelve-year Salvadoran Civil War, reuniting with his family in the United States. As an adult, the artist survived cancer, a disease he believes resulted from the childhood traumas of war, migration, exile, and formerly living in the US undocumented. Throughout this new exhibition, Maravilla retraces his personal journey as a migrant while connecting it with the journeys of others, offering a site for ancestral healing and collective care.

Here's one we might have passed up on reporting. With how good it looks, we thought Shooty Shooty Robot Invasion was gonna be a massive hit. Sadly, it looks like it hasn't reached that high at all. The creator seems to have been abandoned by his publisher before release and is now unemployed from his regular job. So, you might want to check it out as the in-game story is in no way as depressing.
It also makes you think, not all games are breakout hits. It's weird to learn Date Everything only reached 500,000 sales a few weeks ago, we though they'd hit a million right away.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema’s Dark Visions series has something for every scare-seeker—from cult favorites and timeless classics—PLUS a special scary themed menu! Highlights include Movie Parties for Scream and Creepshow, a 40th anniversary screening of Day of the Dead, and cult gems like 28 Days Later, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show, plus the return of the annual frightmare Dismember The Alamo—a mystery marathon of horrifying sights to shock and delight.
Of course, no Halloween would be complete without Dismember the Alamo, our annual pre-Halloween horror marathon returning October 25th (dates vary by city). Expect secret films, wall-to-wall scares, and limited-edition merch like t-shirts, hats, and sticker packs only available to marathon-goers.

The
American Cinematheque is thrilled to present a special residency with
legendary filmmaker John Carpenter ahead of his return to the stage with
John Carpenter: Live In Concert this October in Los Angeles and New
York. Kicking off the series, we’ll celebrate the 45th anniversary of
THE FOG with a screening featuring John Carpenter and producer Larry
Franco in-person.
Admission is free. No advance reservations.
Join
us for a screening of an eclectic mix of television programming
inspired by the research paper, “The Ideology of Liveness,
Theatricality, and the Star Persona: Vincent Price on Television,”
written by archivist Gabz Norte. The paper was produced for the graduate
seminar “Researching the UCLA Film & Television Archive,” taught by
Maya Montañez Smukler (Head, Archive Research and Study Center) in
UCLA’s Cinema and Media Studies program, Winter 2022.
Q&A
with Victoria Price, daughter of Vincent Price and author of “Vincent
Price: A Daughter's Biography,” moderated by archivist Gabz Norte. Price
will sign copies of the book before the screening beginning at 6:30
p.m.

roots going back to Ancient Greece and Asian folklore, the vampire
captivated the human imagination like never before with the arrival of
the novel Dracula and the subsequent birth of cinema. The evolution of
the terrifying and sometimes seductive monster in film and television
will be explored through common themes and trends over the years in
countries ranging from the U.S. and U.K. to France to Hong Kong,
touching on everything from slapstick comedy to searing social
commentary along the way in this perfect occasion to get into the
Halloween spirit.
