Looks Delicious! | Exploring Japan’s Food Replica Culture is the first U.S. exhibition dedicated to this extraordinary craft. With origins in early 20th-century Japan, food replicas were initially made from wax. By the 1920s, these wax models began appearing in department store restaurants in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and beyond to showcase their expanding menus – that featured less-familiar Chinese dishes and yōshoku (Western-style food) – to a curious public. The trend spread quickly, and today these hyper-realistic models are crafted from durable synthetic resins and made to order for restaurants across Japan, becoming an endearing, iconic element of the restaurant experience. Through continued innovation and refinement, they have continued to evolve, moving beyond menu promotion into a uniquely Japanese form of cultural expression, now found not only in shop displays but also on goods ranging from keyrings to phone cases.

South Campus
950 S. Raymond Avenue
Pasadena, CA 91105

Matthew Rolston's Vanitas: The Palermo Portraits, on view in ArtCenter’s South Campus Oculus Space – at the apex of the new Mullin Transportation Design Center – is conceived of as not just an homage to the accomplished mid-career artist, but also as the introduction of an evocative new body of work, one that addresses intertwined narratives of human existence, beauty and the grotesque, and the power of art to connect with the beyond.

Created in the Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo, Sicily, the three photographs presented at ArtCenter comprise the artist’s triptych, which depicts two mummified children flanking an elderly adult, representing the dichotomies of sacred and secular, youth and age, life and death. Vanitas furthers Rolston's exploration of beauty, mortality, and the cultural histories embedded in portraiture.

The Michelle and Kevin Douglas IMAX Theatre, RZC 119, Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts, 3131 S. Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90007

Inspired by Hello Kitty, Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy and the Superflat art movement, TAMALA is an upside-down arthouse sci-fi manga with a bumping 2000s-era electronica score. Tamala is the adorable wide-eyed kitty at home in a multidimensional mega-city controlled by the Catty & Co. corporation. She meets both the God of Death and a new boyfriend, and just might be the reincarnation of an ancient cat cult.
