Scoop Palm Springs Ice Cream Festival: One Should Pass A Spoon

By Jonathan Bilski

One wondered if ten scoops would be enough with twenty different ice cream vendors to choose from. Surely, one would still want more ice cream. Surely.

One was wrong.

The Second Annual Scoop Palm Springs Ice Cream Festival had more than enough ice cream to fill one up on an empty stomach. Sweet, savory, fruity and you know chocolate danced on one's tongue before being gulped down one's gullet. All on a rather oddly cloudy Palm Springs day in its downtown park. As a DJ played loud beats from underneath Marylin Monroe thighs; one cruised from booth to booth trying many amazing local cold flavors.

Gelato Grannuci and Gelato A Go-Go had a home-front advantage and were also walking distance from the park. The former, a more fancy looking place and the latter, a more freewheeling fun vibe. Both tasty and sweet treats started one off with their Italian take on ice cream.

One, then tried, Idyllwild Ice Cream's Campfire Caramel Oreo. Possibly too sweet. A flavor from SHOP(PE), maybe Ube calmed one down. A lime treat from Nieves el Poblano; one started to feel the weight of all the flavors. Off to Breem to try whatever they had concocted. Oh no, how much is Handel's giving out! Ooof! Oh Hannah Banana from Mr. Freeze you're too much.

The longest line we encountered was for Mucho Churror Mucho Cafe. SoCal people and one love fresh made churros. You could get a shot of espresso or chocolate with a fresh fried churro over at their booth.

Now, the ice cream was getting to one. Even suffering a brain freeze would not slow one down.

What stops one in their tracks and after so many other flavors was hard to believe. Brandini Toffe's simple mix of vanilla and chocolate won one over. The simple creaminess of the vanilla mixed with chocolate and a bit of Brandini Toffe's was just perfect. Sometimes the most simple thing done so well, can be your favorite. And, this one was.

If one is to believe Google, that's not what judges of the fest thought was the best though, as you can see Kreem's Chocolate Abuelita stealing the ice cream award.

• 1st Place: Kreem (Palm Springs) – Chocolate Abuelita (rich Mexican chocolate ice cream with cinnamon and a touch of cayenne pepper)
• 2nd Place: La Dolce Piccola (Palm Desert) – Caramel Apple Cheesecake
• 3rd Place: Idyllwild Ice Cream – Campfire Caramel Oreo

One now knows ten tastes are more than enough @ Scoop Palm Springs and to possibly pace one's self with so much ice cream.
