Jason Universe Logo, The F*ck Is This?

By Jonathan Bilski

Just look at those early PC game graphics

With a new prequel series on the way from A24 and the undead hockey mask-wielder having his own haunt at Universal this September for Halloween Horror Nights, Jason's ditching the 13th to be part of  everything leading up to Halloween & more. He's also back in a officially sponsored short film, "Sweet Revenge", up now for free from Angry Orchard. Orchard also put his likeness on special cans, out now; a fun thing to show off at Halloween parties. Funny, as any fan of Jason knows his adamantly against, drinking, drugs and premarital sex. This collaboration reminded another friend and myself of the new logo of Jason Universe as we watched the short.

We immediately hated the logo.

I forgot about it from the Universal announcement of the new Friday the 13th haunt or as they so terribly named it just, "Jason Universe." Which really doesn't tell you much other than Jason is there. It's the first time I remember seeing the logo, thinking it sucked and moving on with my day.

But, encountering it again and seeing it had a stupid little video, I realized how ugly it was.

I mean who thought this looked good? The name is terrible, it implies a multiverse or other timelines. Why not simply go with the iconic name of the movies like Friday the 13th Studios or Camp Crystal Lake Studios or just Camp Crystal Lake Original. Hatchet productions, Hocky Mask Inc...

The switch of some of the UN1V3RSE  letters with the 1 & 3 for Friday the 13th is as clever as the title of the M3GAN or it's sequel M3GAN 2.0, because we know how well that went. But it just looks like a mistake at first.

Just going over how it looks, the graphics look dated like a PS1 game and it's hard to read. I get the style choice, but it just doesn't work. There could have been so many other depictions of how this looked.

Here's three examples I snagged from Amazon from various products.

And, I'm guessing no artist is named on purpose because one wasn't used or if so, didn't want their name attached to it. I don't see @CorySchmitz saying he made it, because I doubt he could make something look that bad and if he did actually make that logo, it would look so much better than the turd above. I hope him or @CreepyDuckDesign reads this and either redesign it for fun or better yet are paid to make a better logo.

But, then I was reminded this isn't actually a studio logo, this is just a logo to remind you it's part of the official Jason brand. Reading up on it from IGN and BD it's much more weird.

So, the rights for Jason and the films series had major problems and got resolved for the new upcoming show. From what I gather the people behind those rights are Horror, Inc.. Horror, Inc for whatever reason doesn't want to use their logo for things they make or I guess control or manage the rights to and instead use the ugly JASON UN1V3RSE logo instead.

It's a way to say this is an official product of the brand. A brand that is sadly called JASON UN1V3RSE.

You may have noticed certain sci-fi shows have a logo animations that play before official shows like Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who. This is a somewhat new thing as it's not the show's opening or title and not a logo for the studio that makes it. Like, Marvel Studios or the animation of stars forming around a mountain for Paramount before you watching something they've made. It seems to just be a reminder your watching something part of a brand. Though, I'm not sure why you need to be informed of that for any legal or informational reason. I think it might just be a fun little thing they do now without much of a point.

I'll give props to Horror, Inc. for having a dedicated site simply called jasonuniverse.com that keeps up with all things related to the Friday The 13th franchise. It's very similar to godzilla.com if you want to keep up with the giant radioactive lizard.

As to simply reiterate the logo and the reasoning behind it seems utterly strange in point and execution. Not entirely sure why it really needs to exist at all. Obviously, Friday the 13th should be the name of the brand unless there's some sort of legal thing that isn't explained. For fun it could be Camp Crystal Lake. And, whatever the name the logo should have never looked so utterly underwhelming.

Whose son made this?
