Pioneertown International Film Festival

Pioneertown International Film Festival

Movies, Cowboys, Indians, dust storms, brutal desert heat, horses, more dust, live music, Joshua trees, big rocks, little rocks, celebrities, a handsome hat-wearing goat, filmmakers, pie fights, starry skies… If you’re an Old West Hollywood Cowboy, or just play one on TV, then the Pioneertown International Film Festival is something to keep your eyes on.

On Friday, May 27, the Things to Do in LA team attended the opening day for the inaugural Pioneertown International Film Festival. TTDILA has been following this film festival’s progress for years because the idea for a Pioneertown film festival is one the more interesting concepts we have come across in a long time. The Pioneertown Film Festival combines old and new western cinema, shorts, music, history, fun branding, and the Hollywood Wild West into one three-day event.

TTDILA presents to you the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of the event.

The Good

An international western-themed film festival set in Pioneertown is such a cool idea. There is so much Hollywood history here and it’s refreshing to see people preserve and promote the Western cinema genre. Pioneertown is a small community and living film set located near Joshua Tree National Park in southeastern California. The location has been featured in hundreds of television shows, movies, music videos, and commercials. It’s an iconic location for a Western-themed film festival. The surrounding hills and deserts provide a spectacular background for pictures and video.

Film programming included a diverse range of Western and Western-inspired films ranging from a 30th anniversary year screening of the animated classic, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West with a Q&A session by director Phil Nibbelink to Western Horror with a screening of From Dusk Till Dawn with original story writer, co producer, and special effects creator Robert Kurtzman. There was even a screening of a Quentin Tartantino-esque Ukrainian Western Ninja hybrid cowboy flick The Inglorious Serfs with a Q&A session by Director Roman Perfilyev.

The opening night film was the world premiere of The Last Manhunt starring Jason Momoa. (Aquaman on a horse? Not really this author’s thing, but that’s cool.) The closing night film was Alexandre O. Philippe’s Western documentary, The Taking. The festival also featured live music, panels, cinematography masterclasses, and other entertainment.

Musical acts included The Dandy Warhols and The Sons of the Pioneers. There was also live music at the rustic open-air bar which helped “cowboy things up” and set the ambiance while also providing much-needed shade and respite from the burning desert sun.

The overall film festival, from what we observed, was well done for a new film festival. There were some minor hiccups, but nothing too objectionable from TTDILA’s perspective. For example, parking was confusing because the desert wind blew down some of the parking signs, and we had issues with scheduling the shuttle service that connected the venues.

Blowing Dust

The Bad

There is no way to escape the fact that Pioneertown is a remote, inconvenient location. The festival venues are approximately 130 miles from Los Angeles, 160 miles from San Diego, 210 miles from Las Vegas, and 36 miles from the Palm Springs International Airport. Cellular phone reception in and around Pioneertown and Joshua Tree is limited. There are limited lodging options in the immediate area and only two restaurants—Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace and Red Dog Saloon—are within walking distance of the festival.

Cowboy Red Carpet

The location shouldn’t be an absolute deal killer to hardcore Western fans (you know who you are!). Let’s face it, the location is a major part of the festival’s charm. However, to non-Western enthusiasts, Pioneertown will be a challenge.

The Ugly

Festival pricing was excessively aggressive. Tickets started at $259 for a three-day festival pass with an additional $59 service fee tacked on. VIP tickets were even more expensive.

Live Music
Live music

Pioneertown T-Shirts, posters, and bandanas were also “ambitiously” priced. The TTDILA team loved the festival branding. The Pioneertown logo, posters, and everything were well designed. This event was one of the few occasions where TTDILA members wanted to purchase festival swag, however… $39 for a T-shirt? $29 for a bandana? $169 for the limited-edition posters? No, no, and no. This is an absolute shame, because the Pioneertown Film festival branding is so on point with its design.

Conclusion

The Pioneertown International Film Festival has tremendous potential. While the ticket prices are, in our view, excessive, and the Pioneertown location remote and inconvenient, Western and neo-Western cinephiles will welcome this film festival.

Perhaps the biggest limitation of the Pioneertown International Film Festival is the nature of the now somewhat niche Western content. Western cinema has a specific audience. If you enjoy Western cinema enough to commit to three days in the authentic Hollywood Wild West, then you will absolutely adore the Pioneertown International Film Festival.

TTDILA Tip

If driving to Pioneertown during daytime, we highly recommend taking a scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. Driving though Joshua Tree adds several hours of driving and exploring time each way, but is well worth the drive. Take the South entrance and drive North and West if driving to Pioneertown. Or reverse these directions if driving away from Pioneertown. The cost is $30 for a seven-day private vehicle pass. Joshua Tree National Park is spectacular!

Hype: Devolver Direct June 9, Burrito Tape & GameHaus Gone Again

No idea what they're gonna pull this year.

GameHaus sadly dead..again, will not even become poorly named Snakes and Lattes.

Don't See Dashcam

Annie isn't okay.

Give an award to whomever made the trailer for Dashcam, because it sells a movie that doesn't exist. Dashcam looks like a fun, found footage action thriller from its amazingly cut together trailer. What it actually is, is a horrible non-stop rap from a woman with a lisp that curses non-stop with a plot that makes no sense.

Annie Hardy, who I've never heard of, plays herself and the most unlikable YouTuber/Twitch
personality that has a livestream of her driving around LA. Also, somewhat out of date for controversy, she's against wearing a mask and is pro-Trump. And, these parts of her personality are not changed or given another side, she's just meant to be hated. And, those aren't the reasons you hate here.

Annie Hardy is an obnoxious troll who raps and cusses non-stop that you hope the worst for minutes into the film. "Sh*t on my d*ck," is her never-ending catchphrase and it's not funny, it's just annoying. Like every other word out of her mouth.

After just deciding to go to England, because LA sucks right now to her, she meets up with a friend, going by the name Stretch (played by Amar Chadha-Patel) and seemingly ruins his life and stumbles into her own horror movie.

Plot, and any sort of arch for Annie don't exist. Just bad stuff seems to follow her and Stretch.

There's a whole thing with her and crosses that I though would tie to religion, but nope. There's no deeper meaning to anything or any sort of flow or payoff.

The trailer shows none of the constant annoyance that in Annie. The trailer has no glimpse of the dumbest women ever in a horror movie that I don't know why Blumhouse thought, "This 40-year-old women who raps like garbage and cusses like a child in Fortnite, she needs a vehicle."

There's great practical effects for a horror film wasted on Annie and everyone else in the film.

The only part that got a chuckle out of me is when Annie is frantically searching for keys and she does the, "Keys, Keys Keys, Keys on Van Nuys", jingle.

Do not see it, even for a so bad it's good feeling. The trailer is a lie.

Or Firestarter (2022)

Blumhouse is just pushing through what was filmed during Coivd and it shows.

Bloody Disgusting has a great review on the horrible remake of Firestarter.

And it's real depressing as the director just did an amazing job with the Jewish horror film, The Vigil. I don't know how it came from that to make such a lifeless, boring remake in Firestarter.

Local Hype: Universal Studio's Getting Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, Space Shuttle Home Groundbreaking & Cinespia 4th of July

Looks like they're playing it safe and we're getting Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge for the main ride for the Super Nintendo World section opening early next year 2023. We were kind of hoping for a different ride based on Nintendo's many games and characters and having a little bit of difference from the Japanese park. But, Universal and Nintendo seem to be copying the park from Japan that already has the same ride.

The ride itself does seem like fun and a few more details were passed along with the press release we're sharing below.

We just wanted to see some Kirby, Smash Bros or Metroid love, Pokemon or Link might have been nice too.

From the press release:

Universal City, California, June 2, 2022 – When “Mario Kart™: Bowser’s Challenge” opens in SUPER NINTENDO WORLD™ at Universal Studios Hollywood in early 2023, guests and fans will find themselves immersed in one of the world’s largest, most interactive rides they have ever experienced. It seamlessly fuses augmented reality with projection mapping technology and actual set pieces along a moving ride track to debut a ride that’s unparalleled anywhere within the theme park industry.

The highly-anticipated opening of SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Universal Studios Hollywood represents the first SUPER NINTENDO WORLD to debut in the United States, designed to transport theme park guests and Nintendo® fans into the world of Mario, Luigi and Princess Peach to be part of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Guests will access SUPER NINTENDO WORLD via the iconic Warp Pipe to enter the land where they will find the “Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge” ride located within Bowser’s Castle.

This innovative achievement will propel guests into a multi-dimensional experience that recreates iconic environments from the Mario Kart games and where no two races are alike. “Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge” is also one of the most complex rides ever built within the entertainment industry.

The sophisticated ride is a multi-sensory cornucopia of color, sound and movement that invites guests to navigate familiar environs through the creative use and integration of head mounted augmented reality (AR) goggles—a key point of differentiation that distinguishes this ride from other theme park attractions.

From the depths of the dungeon within Bowser’s Castle, guests will climb aboard stadium-style, four-seat Mario Kart vehicles inspired by the video game, put on their AR goggles …and then with a 3-2-1 GO! signal from Lakitu, they will be off to the races.

The premise is simple but equally inspiring and challenging and will appeal to guests of all ages regardless of gaming experience. As part of Team Mario, guests will steer through courses underwater and in the clouds to compete for the Golden Cup while collecting coins to defeat Team Bowser and win. “Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge” raises the stakes for guests as an intriguing and repeatable ride with a variety of outcomes.

California Science Center’s groundbreaking for the Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center happened yesterday. After so many years it's great to hear the project physically getting started. Can't find info on when they think they'll be done building it, but let's hope 2023-24. Remember, all the images here are what it's supposed to look like when done.

All Project Renderings are “Courtesy of ZGF”

From press release:

The new 200,000-square-foot addition to the California Science Center broke ground, Tuesday June 2nd. The new educational Center will feature 150 interactive exhibits spanning three major multi-level galleries – themed “Air” “Space” and “Shuttle” – and become the permanent home of Space Shuttle Endeavour, one of only three remaining flown space shuttle orbiters and the only one located on the west coast. In the new Center, Endeavour will be installed vertically, in ready-for-launch configuration, towering 200 feet tall, complete with solid rocket boosters and an external tank, in what will be the world’s only display of an authentic space shuttle system.

Cinespia announced their 4th of July weekend lineup that, for the first time, will feature three nights of firework spectaculars under the stars to accompany screenings of The Fast and the Furious (7/2), Purple Rain (7/3), and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (7/4).

It's almost like living near Disneyland. You best get tickets early as these will probably sell out and the main competition will be Anime Expo.

There's a reason this wasn't happening during Covid. Just reading any synopsis is a downer. These are all utterly depressing films. I'm unsure why American Cinematheque is doing this other than it doesn't want some of us to live.

In some sense, I’m trying to create a protest scene using the most basic protest material- the Cardboard paper.Following our sold out solo exhibition with Yosuke Ueno at the Brand Library and Arts Center at the end of 2020, we are excited to showcase a special collection of 36 new works on paper from the artist as we gear up for his return in the summer of 2024.Thinkspace Projects is presenting Scott Listfield’s latest show with the gallery, ‘The Multiverse.’ This complex show is the result of two years of feeling stuck, both physically and mentally. On the other side of a difficult period globally and personally, Listfield set out to make a show that was autobiographical in nature.

JAPAN HOUSE Los Angeles’s popular Movie & Bites series’ new program features the debut episode of the Japanese serialized drama, “Goddess of the Line: Journey to the Ultimate Ramen!” (Gyoretsu no Megami - Ramen Saiyūki) [Length: 45 minutes]. This new Japanese television series is based on the popular manga in which the main character, Tatsumi Serizawa, is the owner of a ramen restaurant that draws long lines of customers every day. She is also a food consultant and gives a jump-start to struggling or financially distressed ramen shops. One day, customer Yutori Shiomi tells her that the ramen she ordered – a new item on the menu – was not delicious. She applies for a job with Serizawa and promises, despite her lack of professional experience, to help to improve her ramen.

The screening will be followed by a simple recipe demonstration and ramen tasting, featuring toppings that can be used to take your ramen at home to the next level. The event will provide cooking tips and recipes for making the most popular ramen toppings: seasoned eggs (ajitama) and braised pork chashū.
