Made in L.A. 2025 is the seventh iteration of the Hammer’s signature biennial exhibition that showcases artists practicing throughout the greater Los Angeles area. The 28 participants in the exhibition present work not only made in the city but also grounded in its complex and unfolding terrain. Neither myth nor monolith, Los Angeles is many things to many people, and its dissonance is perhaps its most distinguishing feature. The works presented in this year’s biennial include film, painting, theater, choreography, photography, sculpture, sound, and video. Attitude draws them together: Each engages with this city in ways alternately literal, formal, material, and metaphoric. Conceived or made in Los Angeles, they are of this city and nowhere else.

Fulcrum Arts is pleased to present, Sam Shoemaker: Mushroom Boat, featuring works developed around the artist’s August 2025 crossing of the Catalina Channel in a kayak made of mushroom mycelium.
Alongside the mushroom boat itself, the exhibition features large-scale projections, time-lapse videos, and soundscapes that immerse visitors in Shoemaker’s journey over 26 nautical miles of open ocean, where he passed through turbulent water, encountered wildlife, crossed a commercial shipping lane, and battled headwind.
Visitors will also witness the artist’s process of constructing the mushroom boat.

Battle Royale is an intense and brutal story about Japanese high school students who are sent off by their government with three days to kill each other — until only one remains. With its blend of social commentary and high-stakes action, Battle Royale continues to influence modern dystopian storytelling and has inspired countless television shows, video games, and films.
An insightful bonus interview with Battle Royale screenwriter Kenta Fukasaku will complement each screening with an intimate look at the forces that shaped the directorial career of his father Kinji Fukasaku, and how they inspired his landmark final movie.

SOURDOUGH BY LALLY KATZ:
Playwright and performer Lally Katz doesn’t even eat bread—but one sourdough starter pulled her into a whirlwind of obsession, memory, and mortality. What began as a bubbling jar on the counter became a portal to lost loves, miscarriages, cancer scares, and the absurd rituals of suburban life. From being “possessed” as a child to baking pies to seduce a rock star, Katz spins a story that’s funny, devastating, and defiantly alive.
SPARKLES BY MEL STEPHENS:
Mel Stephens turns the gig economy inside out in Sparkles, a brutally funny look at sex work, dead-end jobs, and the absurd ways broke millennials hustle to pay rent. From playing an elf at Macy’s to quitting more gigs than the Great Resignation ever dreamed of, Stephens mines her trash heap of a work life for comedy and catharsis. Her self-deprecating wit shines in this tale of money, madness, and survival.
