Weekly What To Do: The Sun, Don't Look Directly At It Your Not Invicible, Look At Movies Instead

The LA Times has a great article on the upcoming Los Angeles Festival of Movies happening April 4-7. You've never heard of it, because it's the first time it's happening. It has a nice break down of our lack of an official city film festival, but it's still a great time to be a cinephile in LA.

It's all in smaller venues, so be prepared for films to sell out and being able to chat with other fans.

"The Los Angeles Festival of Movies (presented by MUBI and Mezzanine) will redefine Los Angeles as a destination for independent film. Running April 4-7, 2024, we will showcase a curated selection of high-profile narrative and documentary film premieres, talks with local artists, luminaries, and thought leaders; and a party each night, at three exciting new venues on the east side of Los Angeles. LAFM will be the nexus for this city’s robust community to gather, and take advantage of a burgeoning audience for independent film."

"Credited with launching midnight screenings of wild and weird films, Ben Barenholtz (1935–2019) would program his transgressive cinematic discoveries at Chelsea’s Elgin Theater into the late hours of the night, sometimes for months-long runs and typically to packed houses. His first success was with Alejandro Jodorowsky’s acid Western El Topo (1970), at the peak of what J. Hoberman and Jonathan Rosenbaum called “the counterculture cash-in” of 1970 in their 1983 book Midnight Movies. This series presents an overview of cult favorites that first found their fans in the midnight hour. "

"When the art world as you knew it went one way, we went the other. Where elitism is the norm, we dared to deviate. Art isn’t confined to convention or rule, and how you enjoy it shouldn’t be either.

We’ve created something different, and we want you to experience it. We combine affordable and original artworks and 140 independent artists with immersive installations, performances, DJs – and a fully stocked bar."

The topsy turvy world portrayed in Lampe's paintings is a trip out of pandemia. Inspired by an old-timey aesthetic, from Steamboat Willie to Bette Boop and Dr. Seuss, Lampe describes his work as "a mish-mosh of those old-timey influences with some Duccio-inspired mountains and the inevitable light-switch nose.
