There’s never a dull day on Japan's newly established SSSP Kaiju defense taskforce, led by Kimio Tamura, played by DRIVE MY CAR’s Hidetoshi Nishijima. After a particularly challenging encounter, a silver giant descends from the sky to rescue the planet. Dubbed Ultraman, this giant’s identity and purpose are a mystery. SHIN ULTRAMAN is a delightful reimagining of one of Japan’s classic superheroes, full of cosmic twists, charismatic villains, and giant Kaiju.

To showcase Agnès Varda’s influence and suggest her inspirations, this program—which spotlights her Los Angeles films Lions Love (…and Lies) (1969), Mur murs (1981), and Documenteur (1981)—places these three works in dialogue with various short- and long-form films created in Los Angeles during this same period that showcase the vibe of a very specific time and place through the lens of the creatives, visionaries, iconoclasts, and outsiders who make the City of Angels so uniquely vibrant.

Right-wing conspiracies, sadomasochistic sex games, and bodily transformations lure in Max Renn (James Woods), the president of a Toronto television station looking to fill his sensationalist late-night programming. As viewers start tuning in to Videodrome, layers of deception, mind-control conspiracy, and bizarre violence tear at the fabric of Max’s reality. One of David Cronenberg’s most original and provocative works, VIDEODROME speaks to an era in which political commentary and social technologies join forces to reinvent meaning and morality on a daily basis.

Since 2014, DEEP has brought its monthly showcase of experimental film and video art to online and IRL audiences alike, touring festivals, microcinemas, and DIY spaces in America and Europe. Following a pandemic-era hiatus, the program finally returns with a brand new season of transgressive, formally inventive work by artists mostly found online. DEEP is a portal into the true future of moving image art, a rallying cry against traditional modes of distribution, and, most importantly, a fun night out at the movies. DEEP is hosted and curated by filmmaker Chris Osborn, and presented in partnership with MEMORY.
