Things To Go See: Sundance Next Fest, Wallace and Gromit Restored, Assassination

New addition to the site, Things To Go See. Here will remind you about the upcoming cinema hitting LA the week or month of. There's so many special screenings and Q & A's in LA, TTDILA could just be a site devoted to film.

Here we put out our top choices of what to go see, they may not appear in the Weekly What To Do section. So if you're more into film, look out for these and please comment if we missed anything.

Will also be going over film news.

Unlike our review, it seems that the live action Attack on Titan movie is being slammed by reviewers including Kotaku's Brain Ashcraft. I though he reviewed video games and since he writes for Kotaku, who cares about his opinion.

The reviews got so bad that a modeling producer went on Twitter on a rant about how well-funded American movies are compared to Japanese.

Bad move, Yoshihiro Nishimura. Just take reviews calmly and with dignity, at least they're taking the time to talk about your work.

This week is crammed with films to see from all genres, yet we're sure we didn't even put everything you can see up. Everything new starts this Friday, so you'll have to choose how best to spend that evening.

Realty Today, has the whole sad story.

We have high hopes for Turbo Kid, so check the trailer below.

Sundance NextFest
Aug 7-9
The Theater at the Ace Hotel, Special Screening at Forever Cemetery.
$25
All films accompanied by live musical performance, but Cop Car

Odd that it's not held at the Sundance Cinemas, it is the same company, sort of like a big FU to them. Anyway, enjoy some of the best films out of Sundance.  Cop Car was already shown at the Forever Cemetery. In this horror tale...what? I've just been told it's not a horror movie or has anything to do with graveyards. Why was  it at the cemetery? Oh, hipsters. Anyway the Cop Car director got to do New Spider-Man untitled movie because of that film starring Kevin Bacon and two tikes.

One of the other top choices, Turbo Kid, should  like watching an 80's/90's movie with high fructose cocaine cereal.

For those who want to wait in line:

Birdly - Teaser from maxR on Vimeo.

"Virtual Reality Flight Simulator: Birdly Through a full-body virtual reality setup, Birdly stimulates the experience of being a bird from a first-person perspective. Free to all ticket holders upon entry."

VR is still so knew as how it will entertain us. Won't it be great if at the theater you can just pay to be an animal for an hour? 'Did you try being a Rhino?, 'Nah, man, being a dophing is wear it's at. Keep the bestiality jokes for later on that one..

Assassination
Starts Friday, Aug 7
CGV Cinemas

We're suckers for Korean cinema since we have the only CGV Cinemas in the country. A theater chain-straight from South Korea. Assassination looks like a nice action war flick to get lost in.

Synopsis
The year 1933 in Shanghai, a command to covertly assassinate the Japanese Army’s commander is given to AHN Ok-yun, a top-notch sniper sentenced to death. For this task, YEM Sek-jin, an agent of the interim government extricates AHN Ok-yun and her comrades from the prison. Horrible Movie Night: Never Too Young To Die
Friday, August 7, 2015 9:00 pm - 10:30 pm
Nerdmelt Showroom
7522 Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, CA
$8 online, $10 at the door

Nothing beats a hot room behind a comic shop with a terrible view to watch a movie.... A fun evening that would be more fun anywhere else. John Stamos is an action star(?) in this awful looking forgotten gem of bad cinema.

Actor Peter Kwong (Big Trouble in Little China) will join them for a Q&A after.

Your hosts for the evening, JOHN MATHOT (Disney's Star Vs. the Forces of Evil), and AARON H. BAKER (The Comment Section, The Wil Wheaton Project) will present 1986's NEVER TOO YOUNG TO DIE, starring John Stamos, Vanity, and Gene Simmons. This crazypants fever-dream-masquerading-as-a-film has high school gymnast Lance Stargrove teaming up with a sexy secret agent to avenge the murder of his father at the hands of Velvet Von Ragnar, a hermaphrodite bent on poisoning the city's water supply. Yowza!

There'll be comedy from JOHN UNGARO (The Meltdown w/ Jonah & Kumail, Stonecutters LA) and BILL DIXON (National Midnight Society, How to Be a Grown Up), plus FREE POPCORN! You're never too young to come to this show!

The Falling
Starts Friday, Aug 7

That Stark girl you like from Game of Thrones in a uptight British School Girl academy. Conformity trying to be held onto by the staff of the school as puberty and the 70's are almost upon them. I first stopped to look at it because it looks like a horror film. It's more of a mystery or drama with great murky atmosphere to dissolve into.

This is our top indie pick, you won't be seeing this distributed in wide release.

Synopsis:
Set in 1969 in a rural British girls’ school, THE FALLING explores what lies behind a mysterious fainting and twitching outbreak that rapidly spreads amongst the pupils.

At the center of the epidemic are intense and clever Lydia Lamont (MAISIE WILLIAMS) and admired and rebellious Abbie Mortimer (FLORENCE PUGH), both sixteen years old. They carve their initials into a majestic English oak tree, which leans over a magical pond, and vow never to lose touch. But Lydia already feels that Abbie is drifting away from her and soon her fears are confirmed.

A gang of committed friends including prefect Susan (ANNA BURNETT), who longs to be Abbie, and skeptical Titch (ROSE CATON), who remains unaffected by the fainting, surround Lydia. But none of them can take Abbie’s place. Only her older brother, loner, occult-follower and ley-line believer Kenneth (JOE COLE), is able to provide some solace. When the sympathetic young art teacher Miss Charron (MORFYDD CLARK) tries to reach out to Lydia, she herself becomes caught up in the fainting epidemic.

Within the volatile, strange atmosphere of the school and her troubled home life, Lydia feels driven to discover what is really behind everything that seems wrong. As the fainting escalates Lydia confronts the authority figures around her: her mother, self-absorbed home hairdresser Eileen (MAXINE PEAKE), the unbending and indomitable deputy head Miss Mantel (GRETA SCACCHI), and the enigmatic and powerful headmistress Miss Alvaro (MONICA DOLAN). Eventually Lydia’s actions force old secrets to rise to the surface and she finds herself faced with a truth that she never expected.

Oh my! Wallace and Gromit, my word, they're back making us forget about how bad that dumb sheep movie looks, I'm sure kids will like Shaun, just not me.

From the event:

This evening’s program will spotlight the shorts that made the stop-motion twosome’s reputation as Aardman Animations’ co-founder David Sproxton and Wallace and Gromit cinematographer Dave Alex Riddett take us behind the scenes and discuss how these meticulously handcrafted comedic gems were made. In addition, the classic quartet of Wallace and Gromit shorts will screen in world-premiering restorations by Aardman and the Academy Film Archive.
