Why?!? Shrekzel The Treat Of The Summer

This summer treat, available now, at Universal Studios, reminds us that Shrek is with us and a part of us all...

And, looks freaky as a $12 cinnamon sugar pretzel. Honestly, it looks like something more off-putting and horrific. The most obvious question about it: Why not just add green food coloring to it? Shrek's face does look like its been ripped-off.

Anime Expo 2026: Sold Out

The Ghost In Shell (Ohh, they went with the Engrish name) And Went With Prime? Oy

Coming soon from animation wonder house and makers of Dan Da Dan, Science Saru, is the Engrish and dumber version of the original, The Ghost In Shell, not simply Ghost in the Shell. Now, animation wise, this is gonna be great. Story wise...it's never going to be that cyberpunk police procedural you had years ago. It's also coming to Prime, which cares as much about anime as well...it doesn't. The release of New PANTY & STOCKING with GARTERBELT sort of cemented Amazon's care of curation of anime, which is like, " Here you go."

Why the name change? That's what the creator originally wanted it, but when you're trying to release internationally or for the American market it makes sense for name recognition and easy flow. It's strange to choose to add a "The" to it at this point.

Why is it going to be dumber? It's based more on the manga and if you've ever read it and compared it to the movies or series it's just not the same thing. Think much more of an over-the-top 80's/90's manga, because that's when it was created. There was no Laughing Man Arc from the book. A lot of the deeper stuff came from the series staff. And, that's not the case this time it looks like. We'll also see if it's outright as horny as the original too. Some stuff had to be taken out of the first print releases in North America.

It's a brand new dub voice cast and seeing Lizzie Freeman, who also was the voice of Pomni in Digital Circus, as the Fuchikoma robots is an interesting choice.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls - Samurai Outriders

We all knew Deadpool was gonna be in it. But dang, Blade looks cool as Hell with the Muramasa blade.

Adventure Time: Side Quests Is Out Now

The new series is brand new adventures with Finn and Jake. There seems to be a bit less care about continuity, but overall this is way better than any of the other sequels that have come out trying to be more adult or continue the story.

AX Is The Priciest Of Anime Conventions

Not the greatest news to hear. But, at the same time it is the largest anime convention in the US and has the most content. Would it be sweeter if it was cheaper, Hell yes.

And, always remember, L.A. Live is a pit of scum and villainy and food costing more than it's worth. Frankly, the food at the convention center sucks too. If you can wait and eat outside of the area do it or bring bento boxes/lunch. Bring re-usable water bottles. Water was $8 a bottle last year. F the convention center.

Palm Springs ShortFest 2026: Late Night

 By Jonathan Bilski

Welcome! Can you hold it in? Because in Don't Puke our main character could not and we go to experience it all in first person like a VR Drunk Simulator. Did it set the tone for the night? No, that would be the child murder and organ harvesting in What Are Grandchildren Made Of ? Late Night is its own animal of weird, gross and comedy sketch that goes all the way there. And, we dived right into some weird and heartfelt stuff.

Q&A after with some of the directors/crew
One such heartfelt film i have a animated/directed by Rory Waudby-Tolley starts off as a casual listing rap of what the animator has. It slowly divulges into what he doesn't have. And, does it even matter in the long run? Another, much more dour animation, What We Leave Behind, shares a story of rape within a youth hockey league.

We leave that shocking animation for more over-the-top works with CGI feats for the eyes that make them hurt like Um about a creation myth story about bird people and MANTIS STREAM! LIKE & SUBSCRIBE which was on par with Don't Puke on making the audience want to vomit. It, like the previous nights horror block, took swings at current social media. A marriage proposal goes utterly wrong on stream. And it keeps, getting worse for the guy who proposed. Also, weird to see another praying mantis short after that other animated short simply titled Praying Mantis from the Thrills & Chills block.

Deuce Purgatory by Sydney Adams might have been the closes to a "normal" comedy sketch with an utterly terrible tennis player named Shelly and her sucking at a mixed doubles tennis match. There's blood, a talking trophy with long hair and dream sequences far too often. And, a car that needs to be put out of it's misery by the end of the short. Everything about the short makes me think there should be a sketch show featuring the people in and behind it.

What set it apart was not only how funny it was, but the effort put in. The ending credits and title screen have a 16-bit theme. The even made cute chibi 16-bit versions of the cast an animated them for the ending. And, a self -worth achievement. That's a lot of work for a short.

Deuce Purgatory came together thanks to Palm Springs ShortFest. People saw the work of the director three years prior and tapped her to make this new short.

Palm Springs ShortFest 2026: Thrills & Chills

By Jonathan Bilski

A packed festival theaters had Palm Springs ready to get it's spook on with a seven story collection of horror for the Thrills & Chills block for Palm Springs ShortFest 2026. Each film had the ladies on either side of me looking away or going "Oh no." All together they made us laugh, cringe and threw a good chunk of sexuality at us.

On that, the film that was on everyone's lips as we were leaving was Scissors by Hannah Alline. This horror short flipped the slasher trope of a redneck man hunting a group of woman in a cabin in the woods to a group of very well prepared lesbians hunting said redneck. With plenty of humor, non-stop lesbian jokes and possibly the best scissoring joke in a horror movie, it was the crowd favorite.

Both Imago & The End is at Hand surprised the audience with the level of creature work. These effects kicked too much butt and really grossed us out. Didn't expect Jordan Peele's named attached as producer to the Imago short about a young woman dealing with a Mom going let's say, kafkaesque. Or the grossest phone repair with some living creature coming out of it in The End is at Hand. Why does it have leave so much slime and why must a smart phone bleed?

What's sure to last as a disturbing nightmare for the audience; with more bug related horror, is the fully animated Praying Mantis that looks like a Japanese OVA lost from the 80's. Though, it's a Taiwan/Hong Kong production finished in 2025. Disturbing bug eating people action anyone?

The directors and some of the crew behind OBEY!, Scissors and The End is at Hand got up for a Q&A afterward.

What was clear,  was the each work had a theme behind it and just wasn't made for the sake of... it looks cool. From the Q&A we learned: OBEY! was made to satirize the brain rot we get from all the social media in-take of pet/baby celebs and how bad it is behind the scenes. This was done with a ghost dog back for revenge against it's Dog Mom. Scissors was made to share a different view of the lesbian community and empower the would be prey of a horror film. And, The End is at Hand showcased a grim and utter disgusting look on our use of phone use. Where the phone eventually uses us...or at least the worm living in it uses us for food.

Every film got a nice scare out of the crowd and you could see some of these directors going on to make some longer scarier or comical projects.

LACMA's The Art Parade & Christian Marclay’s The Clock Returns

Did you check out LACMA's "The Art Parade" with over 1,000  participants in it? It took place on June 20th right underneath LACMA. Remember, it hangs over the street now.  If you liked any of the crazy projects going on through check out this guide of all of them.

And, Christian Marclay’s The Clock returns to LACMA Saturday, July 25, 7 pm, through Sunday, July 26, 7 pm. It's been over a decade already, since, it was in LA.

The amazing piece of work might be on par with getting into the Criterion Closet for a cinephile. Having logged in check it out for a few minutes or as long as it can grab your attention. Christian Marclay’s The Clock depicts time ( in real time) from clips of cinema and television. Thousands of clips showcase time accurately as though you were checking your watch. And, it's not available online.

Now, LACMA is only staying open 24 hours twice during this run. So, some clips will be harder to see and apparently it never repeats itself in that 24 hour cycle which is kind of insane.

It's costing you the same as admission to the museum and on top of that reservation don't mean jack as it's a first come, first served situation. You'll be in a faster line with membership, but if someone can seat watching all the clock clips they won't be ask to leave.

You can get more details on it here.

Woah! All brand new titles! Out this Fall!

Space Shuttle Endeavour Finally Upright This November

The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center will have the Space Shuttle Endeavour upright this November, ready to launch into our hearts and inspire younger writers to have scenes set around shuttle launches. As a set piece and just a place to learn it'll be amazing when it opens at the California Science Center November 13th, this year.

Other than the amazing sight of the shuttle in the position to blast off ( 20 stories high)  the space center will feature:

-    A 140-foot ascent aboard a gantry-style elevator along the shuttle stack, evoking the experience of astronauts preparing for launch.

 -   The Shuttle Descent Slide drops 45 feet in elevation down a 115-foot-long tubular slide that represents the shuttle’s landing. Guests will see bright orange light representing the plasma that glows as a shuttle re-enters the atmosphere and hear a double boom that evokes the sound of the nose and tail as each breaks the sound barrier on return to Earth.

-    The opportunity to sit inside a replica flight deck and interact with joysticks, switches, lights, buttons and pedals like those that the shuttle commander and pilot would operate.

- A diverse collection of 100 artifacts, including rare and historic aerospace objects, as well as 100 new hands-on exhibits, featuring interactive experiences focused on science and engineering.
