Mina the Hollower Finally Out

Unlike Disney, this is a small studio, so we totally give them leeway with taking forever on releasing a game. We'll have a review out eventually, but it's old school addictive fun.

Stop Being Such A Jack@$$ And Just Watch It

That's a lot of @$$

X-Men '97 Season 2 Is Finally Coming Out This July

Did you guys forget? It's only been... two years? WTF? X-Men '97 Season 2 arrives after coming out in 2024! That's right, one of the most powerful entertainment corporations on the planet can't have 9 episodes of a cartoon come out yearly. I write 9, because this time we only get nine episodes.

We're looking forward to it, but we were looking forward to it, 2 years ago.

It's called momentum, you don't have any Disney.

*I've been watching Dorohedoro Season 2 on Netflix, that's even more a joke. It's first season was back in 2020.

Movie Hype: Not Hearing The Best About ‘Her Private Hell’ & Americana at Brand Memes Is Writing Movie?

Her Private Hell by Nicolas Winding Refn (Drive) was out at Cannes and will be out in late July here in the US. Uhh, the reviews have not been kind. So unkind, they're hilarious.

I'm just gonna post the first paragraphs of two that contain no spoilers and truly dig into both the movie and into the director quite fiercely. And, their quite funny to read.

“Her Private Hell“? More like our public misery.

If, for David Lynch, ideas are like fish in a river, then for Danish provocateur Nicolas Winding Refn, those ideas are like chunks of excrement in an exploded sewage pipe. His first feature since “The Neon Demon” 10 years ago and after allegedly dying for 25 minutes in 2023, the neon-drowned, anguishingly languid and abstruse “Her Private Hell” feels like you’re dying (and very, very slowly) for a soporific hour and 49 minutes. With ghoulish visuals, a coughed-up script in which Refn appears to pastiche only himself, and performances that even at their best just die onscreen under the portentous weight of the filmmaker’s dreadfully detached vision, it’s one of the most miserable theatrical viewing experiences in years."

Read more of Ryan Lattanzio's review at IndieWire

"Three years ago, Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn died for 20 minutes. When returned to the world of the living, the director felt as if he was experiencing everything anew, including a burning desire to make films. This biblical wiping of what came before might be the only explanation for “Her Private Hell,” a film that unspools as a curious allegory for the artificial intelligence era in how it seems constructed by a machine fed to the brim with the work of NWR and able only to spit out a hollow carcass of yesteryear brilliance."

Read more of Rafa Sales Ross' review at The Playist

And, good for them; the team behind the hilarious, sometimes hyper-local, Americana at Brand Memes is writing a moving about criminals who stole NFTs of 2007 Kia Sedona minivans. Even as dumb as that is, we are talking million in stolen funds. Read more about it at the Hollywood Reporter

Don't Forget To Vote

Our election is Tuesday, but if you didn't mail your ballot (it's too late/drop it off) you need to find your local polling place or you can really go to any polling place in your county and vote. It's pretty easy here, we're not Texas.

If you need help choosing who to vote for we recommend going over to CalMatters. They have a lot of great info on who to vote for and no ties to any party. So Democrat, Republican...Green, it just gives you info on the candidates and what's going on.

Tuesday, June 2, 2026 – 8:30 pm
LA - FRANKLIN
$17.94

Pack your bags for a no holds barred improvised trip – be it a family reunion, camping trip, or work retreat.

Before the show, each comedian secretly packs a backpack full of strange and random props. The improvisers exchange backpacks onstage at the beginning of the show and then must use and justify why ‘they’ brought each of the various props on the “trip.”

All edible props must be consumed by the unfortunate soul who pulls it out.

Anime Riverside 2026 This Weekend

Anime Riverside
May 30th and 31st, 2026
Riverside Convention Center

Woah, is the precursor to AX already here? Yes, Anime Riverside is here to pump you up for all things anime. So get prepared with a smaller con, but still big on community at this anime convention. This one packs a lot of voice talent since it's such an easy drive from LA. So, go through whose gonna be at it to see if you wanna meet your fav voice actor in person.  There's much more than that, go the web-site above and check the full list of all to see and do there this year.

Other than that downtown Riverside basically bends to being an anime convention for two days.

Some tips:

There is plenty of parking, just look online or plan ahead. Don't pay a huge amount nearby, just walk a few blocks to save cash. Same with food. I think the Food Lab is a rip. If you find any place that looks good nearby to eat, sadly that's the usual price. The 24 ramen spot is open for real all night and day. Sadly, it will be insanely busy, because everyone is an otaku going. And, it's pretty good.

We weren't happy about it last year, but check in is still oddly away from main street, you got to shlep all the way around to get your pass. So plan ahead to be walking around the convention center or getting dropped off near check in.

We always recommend the Anime Wrestling, check the times and bring shades, hats and sunscreen. Buy some cold drinks. Sadly, they haven't learned that it needs to be shaded. Watch cosplayers beat each other up in the veil of wrestling.

Fewer panels this year...no Super Saiyan Scream Off! Check out the full list of panels here. The JoJo Pose-Off!is still going, thank goodness!

Kinokuniya Offically Returning To Little Tokyo & Kadokawa Has Retail Stores Called Manga Spot?

We already wrote about it, but it looks like Kinokuniya's aiming for June for opening, but don't have an official date. It's still very funny as it was in Weller Court, right next door for years. We can only guess they were priced out with rent and then to come back right next door...chef's kiss.

It looks like Kadokawa is going to try harder with their retail stores in the US. Don't think we've ever seen a Manga Spot. Nearest to us in San Diego.

Terrible Trailers/ Fun Watches: Buffet Infinity & Human Vapor

Ughhhh, my poor eyes and my poor cinephile heart. Who cut these trailers? Did an algorithm cut the Netflix one? Sheesh.

Anyway, here's two new things you should stream or rent.

First up, if you like late night, weird stuff and some good ol' funky horror let me introduce you to Buffet Infinity. What starts off seemingly as a fight between competing restaurants only seen through local commercials slowly descends into cosmic horror level threats. It's so ingenious and so good with a small budget. Each commercial seems so real until it gets to the cursing and violence later on. You'll laugh at how a restaurant commercial seems to be gaining sentience and is kind of a bitter douche towards it's only competition. Each new commercial it makes making fun of a different type of restaurant or just being a$$.

Here's BD's review

I'm sorry, but the trailer, totally loses anyone's appetite for Buffet Infinity.

Even after watching the movie the trailer is not justified. It doesn't really make sense why it doesn't just cut clips from the commercials from the film or the makers didn't just make another commercial for Buffet Infinity, the real in-story restaurant. It's baffling Yellow Veil didn't tell them they had to do a new one. Just see the actual film. Throw-away the trailer.

Buffet Infinity is available for rent or buy online multiple places online.

G-d this trailer blows...and I don't mean from ruining key moments from the series. Wait, yes I do. I'll admit this is the Philippines Netflix teaser, but I doubt it'll change if they release a English one. Except, a bad dubbing.

It's from an and old Toho property Human Vapor, which probably should be changed to The Human Vapor. In any case, is seems someone gets superpowers and fights corruption in modern Japanese society. But, the trailer right here sort of took out the suspense and made it feel all over the place. It was so randomly cut. We get the inklings that a female detective reporter or detective is gonna go looking for him and try and find the truth behind why he gets powers, but the rest is just going by too quick.

I noticed a lot of Netflix teasers/trailers are cut this way and with awkward end points. Spend the money on and end point for the trailer.

Hey, I don't want it to be a "Surf Dracula" thing. Human Vapor better turn into gas first episode, but whatever person or AI cut this sure made some strange choices.

Still want to see it, I'm assuming whomever cu the trailer didn't work on the show. Sadly, the reverse of the first trailer we watched, which went way to artsy and weird.

Human Vapor is out July 2 only on Netflix.

Things From Another World Closing @ CityWalk Sept 30th & Marvel Cosmic Invasion - DLC #1: Cyclops & The Thing

Sad news as Things From Another World is closing at CityWalk, September 30th this year. Some version of the comic book store has been gracing CityWalk for decades.

Losing it means losing a precious starting point for people to get into comics. The same comics where all the movies, shows and games (like the DLC will be ending this post on comes from). Things From Another World being in such a well known area for any tourist or young Angeleno would be use in tandem for multiple special events related to superhero movies or special signings like the one I'm posting below.

This is a real shame, but is happening after Dark Horse Comics, which owns Things From Another World got restructured and many older staff were laid off. They're apparently creating a Games Division, but don't want to do deal with any sort of brink-n-mortar-retail.

We're going to miss it. And, CityWalk is gonna be much lamer without it.

And, we're probably not getting Pokemon Center at CityWalk ever. I once reported rumors of that happening years ago. But, I have to think the standards are too high to maintain one on par with a Japanese store with how much we pay people in America.

In not sad news, The ever-lovin', blue-eyed Thing and eye punch beams Cyclops are new DLC for Cosmic Invasion out now wherever the game is available.

The Furious Monday & Beyond

If you're lucky enough to "really" have the day off Monday, go see The Furious thanks to Big Bad Film Fest in Gardena Monday. If not, wait for a Beyond Fest screening or until it's in theaters for real June 12th.

Sigh, I'm sorry, but I'm just not digging the artists Lionsgate is choosing for The Furious posters. Seems there's gonna be a series? The latest one from Vincent Aseo just doesn't grab me, just like the last one didn't. Props for giving artists a try though to make the movie stand out.

Can't wait to see the pummeling and bloodshed!

Delicious in Dungeon / Ryoko Kui Exhibition Coming To LA July 2-26

Delicious in Dungeon / Ryoko Kui Exhibition is coming to Los Angeles July 2-26 @ Art Share LA

more deets

This, of course, starts when Anime Expo is in town.

Looks like you have to spend around $23.11 to get in and enjoy some great photo spots and some great looks at Ryoko Kui's art. It's walking distance from Little Tokyo. But, I say you go with a nice safe big group anywhere downtown now. Even though your pretty much in the arts district.

Pictonico! WarioWare Like Mini-Games For Your Phone?

Woah, Nintendo, where did Pictonico! come from? The new game coming to both Android and iPhones May 28th has a very similar tone of WarioWare mini-games, but uses your photos. So, games star you, your friends, family and what celebs pics you can snag online. The mini-games might be familiar because it comes from WarioWare developer Intelligent Systems.

Other than the obvious note of it not being on the Switch 2; no camera; it's odd how little Nintendo seems to be promoting this. The gaming press seems to be in love with this playful fun idea from Nintendo, but is a little dismayed about how low-key the big N is about showcasing it.

We don't get it either over here. It seems like a perfect attention grabber for any group stuck in line or at at a party. More games should be able to grab your head so you can fight ninjas or fling food.

Los Angeles Nomadic Division presents Field Set, a new sound installation and series of sculptural interventions using recordings and materials from the site of artist Kelly Akashi’s former home and studio in Altadena, California.

The project features a collaboration between Akashi and Phil Peters. Using subterranean microphones, Peters has been continuously recording Akashi’s property since May 2025, capturing the sounds of demolition and nearby rebuilding in the wake of the devastating Eaton Fire. Presented for the first time, these field recordings focus on the debris removal and excavation period and are arranged into a three-hour durational soundscape. Played through large-scale subwoofers constructed by Peters, the work unfolds across the ground and through low-frequency sound, using the site as a physical surface and a field of resonance.

This summer, the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles transforms literature into a sprawling contemporary art experience with We’re Very Well Read, It’s Well Known, an extraordinary group exhibition bringing together more than 450 contemporary artists in a celebration of books, storytelling, and visual imagination.

The ambitious exhibition invites each participating artist to reinterpret a favorite literary work onto a single 9” x 6” fine art panel — the dimensions of a traditional book. The result is a monumental “visual library” where novels, poems, manifestos, memoirs, and cultural touchstones are reimagined through painting, drawing, sculpture, abstraction, muralism, pop surrealism, and conceptual art.
