Justice League Action Still Exists

Here's a new short from Justice League Action. Check out those curvy designs by Shane Glines on all them evil villain girls running amuck.

We just love going over theories as to why what should be a flagship show is put at an early morning time slot while Teen Titans Go! plays almost endlessly on the CN.

Our newest theory is that, even though it's  a ways off, their saving the show for release when the DC digital service is streaming next year. Because, they'll have about two shows for content. At this point they haven't really told us that much about it other than we get live action Titans and season 3 of Young Justice for the streaming service. So that's two shows to pay for?

How Does Sony Even Function? The Emoji Movie Is Not Liked

Love this snippet from the LA Times Review

“The Emoji Movie” isn't terrible, it isn't offensive or outright bad. It just is, and there could be far worse ways to spend 86 minutes. But maybe, just maybe, it'd be the better choice to spend those 86 minutes outside, or reading a book, or talking face-to-face with another human being. Because “The Emoji Movie” could not be more meh.

Comrade Detective & Swedish Dicks Out This August

Oh, man, this show looks like too much fun. Poorly dubbed by the likes of Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon Levitt as two Soviet buddy cops in 1983 Romania fighting Capitalism. It's weird, but the trailer below explains it all.

Scare LA Has A Lot Going On This Year

Scare LA, Aug 5-6, the premiere Halloween convention for SoCal hasn't stopped telling us about all the stuff that's going to be going on this year. To get an early take on the newest in Halloween scares or if you just love the holiday here are some details on their dark hall.

-Scarywood
A 60,000 sq.ft. dark hall, will include:
-The world premiere of ‘Flatline” a groundbreaking new virtual reality experience where the audience can experience having a near-death experience in the back of a real ambulance and going to the other side and coming back irreversibly changed!
-‘Rose MacBeth’ a blindfolded knife fight graveyard, presented by Wise Guys Events and a two-time Developers Choice Award winner!
-‘The Summoning’ an exclusive AR experience from Clever Fox and director, Dekker Dreyer. A group of explorers will enter the basement of the Magnolia Hotel and with their smartphones reveal a hidden dimension of the gruesome and untouched crime scene of occultist Raphael Davidson who went on a killing spree in 1987.
-‘ZTag Zombie Infection Arena’ an interactive game experience where four groups of humans are tasked with discussing the future of ‘The Safe Zone’, an area inhabited by humans after Los Angeles was destroyed by the undead. Fans can choose which group to join, including the undead and will have free will as to whom they will award their loyalty!
-‘Debis’ Halloween 3D’ a UV blacklight maze with a surreal vibe and where monsters will abound!

Close Enough From The Guy Who Gave You Regular Show

Coming sometime to TBS is Regular Show creator J.G. Quintel's new show Close Enough, which seems to be a apartment sitcom. It also looks like How Did This Get Made's Jason Mantzoukas is a main character. We're unsure when it'll come out, the only details online are it being in this year or next and already has thirteen episodes planned.

Doom Patrol #7 Back To The Old Ways

We haven't done a comic review in a while-so that should be some indication on how much we cared about this single issue- you see, we couldn't pass up writing about Doom Patrol #7 from writer Gerard Way and art from Mike Allred from DC's Young Animal line of weirder comics. Doom Patrol has been going in a different directions over the years, but this issue pays homage to just how nutty the original series was back in the 1960's.

It all starts with a trip to the mall and the old team leader, The Chief, Niles Caulder spying on one of the Doom Patrol eating fries. After a bad introduction the former team leader is off to Orange Julius in wait if some of the team want to discuss him being in charge again. Which is a horrible, horrible idea. Just mixing the normality of the mall with the cooky cast has you wondering what's gonna happen.

You don't have to have been reading the series to get into how wacky the situation becomes, because it's so insane that it'll have you questioning what's going on.

For those who have read the old Doom Patrol, it's like picking up a unreleased issue from decades ago.

The current Doom Patrol quickly gets rushed out of their modern outfits and in Robotman's case his body and gets put into the classic costumes of the original team. This is all done in the tempo of a fast-paced Chief, who seems to have a highly convoluted plan in motion. So convoluted that were traveling into dimensions we've never heard of to gather a sort of goo made out of bad ideas. These insane concepts that usually aren't allowed in modern stories dominated the older tales.

The ride keeps gaining more a more momentum as we travel to a unknown world through a whole new way of exploration and the team doesn't even use their super powers that they normally would. All the while The Chief telling them exactly what to do.

Now to step back for a second and even revealed again in the comic is that The Chief, caused everyone on the original teams "accidents" that changed them and made them into super heroes and other really bad stuff. So him becoming leader of the Doom Patrol again is a great way to look back at the old comics and really see him as an insane super-smart sociopath that was forcing the Doom Patrol to do whatever he fancied.

Spoilers

The result of this adventure has the team back to normal without the Chief, but the ending is just so great. The whole reason the Chief got the team back together was just to pay off a gambling debt?!!

End of spoilers

Getting through it all just shows that however crazy the new adventures the team goes on now-a-days is nowhere as weird as it could get in the past.

Taiko Drum Master Coming Out In English, How The Hell Do I Order It

In what will be more than likely taking up my time will be when the English language version of beloved Taiko Drum Master comes out of the Japanese PlayStation store October 26. Taiko No Tatsujin: Drum Session! is in English for some reason, but has no indication of being released directly in North America! I kind of find it hard to get the new taiko drum peripheral and game for PS4 here.

Ughh, am I  going to have to special order from an online store or try one of the indie game stores....

For this game, I'll have to.

Sony, just sell the game here! I want to play Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen with friends!

No Teen Titans Go!...Vs Teen Titans...Tears of Sadness

It seems that earlier post of that awesome art of Teen Titans Go! being severely beaten by the original team was just that, like tears in the rain. It seems since the show started DC's just had fun with the art at Comic-Con. Those lucky enough to have gone might have snagged a bag version of the epic beat down.

DC Direct, I would be willing to buy it as a poster, but please, Starfires and Silkies can't be friends.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride & STAR TREK VI - Outdoor Concert & Movie Night

We have two special movie nights this week. First up,

The Ancient Magus' Bride Anime Movie Night
July 26, Select Theaters

Oddly, the actually web-site doesn't explain that you're probably getting three episodes of the new series from the same animators of Attack on Titan. It hasn't come out on the air waves of Japan yet, but it looks gorgeous. Based on manga of the same name we get the story of Hatori Chise , who has lived a life full of neglect and abuse, devoid of anything resembling love.  Just when all hope seems lost, a fateful encounter awaits her. When a man with the head of a beast, wielding strange powers obtains her through a slave auction, Chise's life will never be the same.

Running before The Ancient Magus' Bride is an exclusive first look at Children of Ether, an original Crunchyroll production.

Next up,

Thursday at 7 PM - 9:30 PM
Japanese American National Museum
100 N Central Ave, Los Angeles, California 90012
Free
The Japanese Museum is really hedging all their bets on George Takei lately.
"Join us for a set by Tim Russ (Tuvok, on Voyager) Crew, a pop-rock band, followed by a screening of "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" (1991), the last of the Star Trek films to feature the entire original cast from the television series, including George Takei as Hikaru Sulu, now commander of the USS Excelsior. Welcome remarks by George Takei (subject to availability).

Presented in conjunction with "New Frontiers: The Many World of George Takei," on view at the Japanese American National Museum through August 20, 2017. Free admission to the museum on Thursdays from 5-8pm (last admissions at 7:30pm), so arrive early to check out "New Frontiers" before the event. For information about the exhibition:

TTDILA Readers Ask: Why Aren't Your Reviewing Kuso?

Our Answer: It's Gonna Be Really F*cking Gross

At TTDILA we've reviewed a lot of terrible movies, even sometimes picking the "So bad, it's good" movie for your pleasure during our Weekly What To Do. Kuso is in a whole other category as it's trying to be gross, maybe the grossest film ever and it'll more than likely succeed.

Kuso is the story of LA-that's a reason you might have though we'd cover it immediately- where the city has had a major earthquake, possibly the big one and now a lot of people have strange boils. From there the film is suppose to be body horror and weird experimental ideas...gross sexual ideas.

Some are proclaiming it the grossest movie ever which has the title is usually held by 1975's Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom, whose director managed to get murdered by being run over by his own car. The film, which we suggest you never watch, is the story of essentially Nazis creating a society after escaping WWII with children, yes, in a bad way. They do horrible things.

Now we've never seen Salò, we did however see the movie which we usually don't name, The Greasy Strangler as part of Sundance Nextfest, last year. On a side note, Sundance Nextfest will be returning to LA at The Theater at the Ace Hotel in August with six new films and live music. One of which is the film Bitch, about a Mom losing her mind and becoming a dog...in mind only.

At Nextfest we were introduced to Royal, before seeing The Greasy Strangler. A short part of a bigger project from Flying Lotus, a mixed media DJ. We had received a bag with a bit of rope in in as a gift. Only later did we realize that it wasn't a gift bag, but a barf bag!

The rope,, ehhh. You see Royal was actually a part of Kuso, so we've seen some of the film and...it is some of the grossest live action we can muster. It's on par with 80's horror gore...but that gore being sexualized. We don't want to remember it. Because of that, we're not sure if will ever see the finished version.

You, you on the other hand can. It is playing in LA and it might be the only way to alleviate the need or to earn your film lover cred. Because the only way we recommend seeing it is with an audience. Not at someones house, because you don't want memories of that film tied to somewhere you live or visit.

When we saw Royal together with a n audience, we shared a comradery. The audience and us, we cringed together. You have to be pretty sick to watch this by yourself. So share the sickness, the g-d awful gross out that is Kuso, the Japanese word for sh*t with your friends or others. Because it's just unhealthy to watch it alone. It's a first world war story to tell your friends about.

Kuso
Now Until July 27
The Cinefamily

Sundance Next Fest
Aug 10-13
Theater @ The Ace Hotel
Tickets ($15-$35)

The only one we really would like to see is Bitch +Sleigh Bells. Basically, the story of a housewife so miffed by her awful family she's act like a real bitch, I mean a dog. So now her family has to deal with their Mom being a dog, in mind only. It's not the 80's or 90's where that would have been a real movie

VHS Comes Back From The Dead: Slashback Video Opens Sept 9

Crawling its way from old media hell is "Slashback Video." In the vein of the Everything is Terrible having a rental store that only carried Jerry Maguire we're getting another VHS store art installation, except this time, it makes more sense. Slashback Video is celebrating picking up horror movies like in the days of yore, before Netflix and Hulu. Back in a time when you had to search the shelves and choose what to watch based on box art and recommendations from the staff.

Now, sadly, you won't really be able to rent any of the VHS copies, but you will be able to browse them. Feel the weight of videos in your hands and check out the great box art.

Now some of that box art will be brand new. Artists from all around will be getting cases to mock up as they please. So you'll have new art pieces that you can procure while looking around at what it was like to get your horror movie night on.

On top of that you'll be given an empty VHS case that you will have to drop off in the return basket, that's your ticket for entry.

Now it's starting Sept 9, but don't worry, it'll be around into October, so you'll have plenty of chances to check it out.

Slashback Video Opening Reception
Saturday, September 9 at 8 PM - 11:59 PM
Bearded Lady's Mystic Museum
3204 W Magnolia Blvd, Burbank, California 91505
$10

Come to the opening reception of Slashback Video - an ode to the VHS days of horror that's one part pop-up shop and one part art installation. Step back in time to the 1980s when mom and pop video stores thrived and gaze upon a wide array of posters, VHS tapes, promos and more. Brought to you by Mixtape Massacre, Creepy Co., FRIGHT-RAGS, Waxwork Records and Phantom Carriage Brewery!
