TERRIBLE THINGS Interview

by James Cohen

Today we have an interview with Rob Hebert, co-creator of TERRIBLE THINGS: The Party Game Where Everyone Loses. Gameplay revolves around teams facing challenges from three categories: Art, Facts, and Performance. Failure not only impedes your progress but means facing a Humiliation card.

The Kickstarter campaign for the game was launched this past Monday and in five days it's garnered over 40% of its $75,000 goal. If you're already considering team names, keep in mind you have until September 25th to pledge.

On to the interview...

TERRIBLE THINGS is off to a good start with $20,000 pledged during the first day. Assuming the funding goal is met, should we expect to see the game available in stores?
Absolutely. Our goal was always to make TERRIBLE THINGS available in retail. But we wanted to give our Kickstarter backers something special with the 50-card bonus deck, the option to put your own card in the game, and exclusive access to the Banned Deck. Even if, down the line, TERRIBLE THINGS is on the shelves at big box stores, it won't be the same as the Kickstarter version.

Are there currently any plans for stretch goal incentives?
Right now we want to focus on making the best worst game we can. We haven't discussed stretch goals yet, because we don't want to compromise or overpromise. But if we raise enough to do something special without delaying rewards for our backers, we'll definitely consider it.

One of the pledge rewards is admittance to the game release party at the iam8bit gallery - is there any affiliation with them?
We're good friends with Jon and Amanda (co-founders of iam8bit). We couldn't be happier to host the TERRIBLE THINGS launch party at their incredible gallery.

I'm eager to see how people will mime "eating glass". What's the card-writing process like?
The first step was just to come up with thousands of really TERRIBLE THINGS without worrying about whether they would make good cards--just a complete creative dump. That was probably the most fun part of the process, because it became a game in itself, the two of us just trying to top each other on how outlandish or offensive we could be. Then we combed through our master list and tossed out anything that either wasn't funny or couldn't be turned into a playable card. After that we chose which category--Art, Facts, Performance, or Humiliation--each terrible thing fit. We actually ended up with way more cards than we needed, so after that we went about taking turns cutting cards that were too offensive or not offensive enough until we had a manageable number. Some went into the trash pile, others we put aside for the Banned Deck.

That $10,000 pledge reward went fast - the one where the backer gets to design a tattoo for co-creator Rob. Have the "size and placement negotiations" already begun?
They have. We didn't want to cop out by making it the size of a dime and putting it on the underside of an ass cheek where no one will see ever see it, so we're working with the backer to come to an agreement that allows me to live a semblance of a normal life but gives the backer something worth the money they laid down. Assuming the campaign is a success, there will be a press release revealing the identity of the backer and a video of me getting the tattoo.

The Chicken-Shit Rule says a team must move back one space if they refuse to follow a humiliation card's instructions. Does the team move forward otherwise or stay in place? I have to prepare mentally for how brave I need to be.
When you fail a challenge and have to draw a Humiliation, the Chicken-Shit Rule allows you to either perform the Humiliation and stay put or skip the Humiliation and move back a space. We've also played games where skipping a Humiliation puts your team back at the start. But the best games don't use the Chicken-Shit Rule at all.

In the promotional video there were quite a few interesting collectibles in the background - are those cookie jars? And who's the collector?
It's funny how many people have brought up the cookie jars! We filmed the commercial at a friend's house in North Hills, and he has a ton of great collectibles, everything from video game art to classic toys. We were originally going to take down the cookie jars, but when we framed the first couple of shots, we decided they looked cool, so we kept them.

Can we have details on the "blood oath ritual" that blessed the souls up for offer or is that veiled in occult secrecy?
We can't reveal all the details, but we can confirm that it will involve both actual blood and a real oath. There might also be a couple of cloaks and pentagrams in the mix. Anyone with access to a goat's head should hit us up.

Anything else you want people to know?
Just that we want to give a huge thanks to everyone helping to make our terrible dream a reality by backing us on Kickstarter! We're incredibly humbled by the support so far, and we can't wait to get our awful game into everyone's hands.

Movie Hype: For Shame AMC

Looks like AMC isn't coming ahead of Arclight and it's ill-designed new membership happening in October. Oddly, enough it somewhat connects with Gold and Silver, like Arclight's new Gold and Silver circles. The LA Times reported back in June on how AMC is now adding surcharges for certain theaters on Silver and Gold tickets. These tickets are commonly bought in pairs at Coscto at a major discount. Silver tickets are stuck with a wait two weeks policy, while Gold tickets get you in whenever. AMC has since July 8 been "location charging" patrons on these tickets.

"Beginning July 8, AMC will apply the $2 surcharge for any Gold or Silver ticket used after 4 p.m. at the AMC Burbank 16, AMC Burbank Town Center 6, AMC Burbank Town Center 8, AMC Century City 15 and AMC Santa Anita 16."-From the LA Time article

Bad show AMC, show your the better theater. People have been getting these tickets for years and it's not an easy process. You have two wait in a second line at Costco to pick up your tickets, a transaction that shouldn't take that long.

Regular Show Season 5 and Uncle Grandpa Premiere September 2

Uncle Grandpa finally comes to Cartoon Network Monday, September 2. The eclectic show was initially a short made years ago for Cartoon Network's never seen other than secretly online Cartoon institute. It led to creator,  Pete Browngardt's Secret Mountain Fort Awesome, a hard to like series.

"Joining Uncle Grandpa are Belly Bag, his right-hand man who happens to be his fanny pack, voiced by Eric Bauza (Ben 10 Omniverse), Mr. Gus, a dinosaur person who Uncle Grandpa rescued from extinction when he was merely a tiny egg, voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson (Green Lantern: The Animated Series), Pizza Steve, an egotistical slice of pizza in sunglasses voiced by Adam Devine (Workaholics, Pitch Perfect) and a realistic flying tiger powered by rainbow propulsion named Giant Realistic Flying Tiger. Together, this eclectic bunch is there to aid Uncle Grandpa on his various journeys, whether by providing a voice of reason or encouraging even more fantastical adventure."

The added sidekicks sound a bit annoying, but even the next work from the creator of Cowboy Bebop threw them into his next show Space Dandy.

Here's a cool promo item I received as press

Regular Show Season 5 begins September 2 as well with an episode of Mordecai and Rigby trying to get Margaret's jacket back to her at college.

"New episodes of Regular Show will also feature a special Halloween episode, a 30-minute Thanksgiving special Regular Show style, and an illuminating glimpse into Skips' past."

Game Hype: Lost Planet 3 Logs, DuckTales Remastered I'll Finish Some Day

Don't look for anymore DuckTales Remastered logs coming up on the site anytime soon. Perhaps, a post simply saying I finished the game somewhere in the future. DuckTales Remastered brought back the crazy, nonsensical platformers of yesteryear into the grasp of a new generation that didn't grow up with the show. It did a wonderful job with new graphics from WayForward and even felt like a lost episode of the show with the real voice-actors coming back.

I'm now stuck on the very last boss. The poorly named Dracula Duck, not Duckula, but Dracula Duck, which would be Dracula Human if the planet were ruled by ducks. Luckily, ducks haven't taken over yet, be careful there smart creatures. Dracula Duck's insane patterns of becoming giant and biting me, becoming a dragon and making a wall of bats has knocked my Scroogey ol'd butt too many times. I want to save the day and save me' boys from Magica, but I have to jump on two bats before bonking on D' Duck's head.

Until then, I'll wait for that special cut scene.

Over at Mondo you could get some  special posters based on DuckTales, but there already sold out it seems.

Lost Planet 3 Logs

Spoilers

Currently, I'm trapped in a room with some Akrid deer who won't stop bugging me! Trapped to repay a life debt in a society that's only been away from earth for 40 years. So the concept of life debt seems a little unsound as they weren't a group of Indians trying to settle in space. Trapped with these annoying bug deer all because a cute girl saved my life from her crazy Dad and sadly I'm still married. Wait... just something about my grandchild. Did I mention that the game is taking place in the narration of me as an old man dying with my grandchild listening? I may have forgotten due to all the rocks falling on me. Still in vivid detail I tell my grandchild stories of me on this miserable planet filled with giant bugs. Earth is suppose to be awful in the future. Still would seem better than a planet covered in ice filled with giant bugs!

Oh, Lost Planet 3 the prequel ... oh, oww. Let me just turn down The Shining creepy rain music for a second so I don't blow out my ears. Every time! I'm in a corridor or with some tiny bugs, wah wah "creep music". Love that music. You can invent new creepy music too y'know. On the side of music, the giant robot rig I pilot plays it from time to time. Jim Peyton, who I'm playing as can do little to choose when the music is played and for the times I'm walking stepping on bugs I would have liked too. No, for some unknown reason my music player will not work at certain times. Don't put in the feature Spark, unless someone can customize it. Even if Jim has to put down some in game currency, which is now T-Energy, sweet orange Akird blood that happens to pump through the planet to buy some tunes.

The game is a new take on the series with a linear story that makes sense this time. In many ways it does feel like a prequel with all the tech you love at an earlier time when it wasn't as cool. I'm stuck in a see of conspiracy and what seems to be a more linear plot to follow coming from an American developer, just not a great plot. It's sort of like Tom Cruise's recent sci-fi flick. It has the action and has some great scenes, but it won't be anyone's favorite sci-fi film. At least this game has no ties to New York so far like that same  Tom Cruise film.

So we lose the convoluted and different perspective story of Lost Planet 2 and the "I have amnesia" plot from Lost Planet 1 for a okay sci-fi tale in the prequel.

More logs to come with more depth in gameplay and overall story happenings.

Halloween 2013: No Racoon City For Us

Tickets are ready for purchase for Universal Halloween Horror Nights.

Sadly, we don't get Universal Orlando's Resident Evil Escape From Raccoon City or Cabin In The Woods SECTION.

"The experience includes encounters with Cerberus dogs, lickers, Nemesis and I'm all but certain there will be a lot of atmospheric fog effects whispin' around. There's even a room where the action will appear "paused," with characters frozen in place."- Capcom Unity.

This Resident Evil area takes from the games not from the worse and worse getting films. There's even a section that will be a paused battle during gameplay.

This comes from Universal Japan which had it a year prior. Over there now, they don't seem to have anything tied to video games.

Much sadness and weeps and snot running down our faces at no Cabin In The Woods section for our Universal.

What it looked like in Japan.

Zombies!  A new zombie mag is out now. I'd give you a link, but they don't seem to have any online presence. Above is there first issue. Strangely enough, Zombie Magazine already exists, but it's website has not been updated since April 2013.

More updates to come in September, so many more. There is so much to do for Halloween this year. I'll have break downs of theme parks, haunts, events and horror screenings coming up in the the next couple of weeks and a handy guide should be up on the right side of the site to keep you updated.

Breaking Bad Finale @ Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sept 29 How To Get Tickets

Tickets for the Breaking Bad Finale at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery will go on sale September 4th here at noon at the Cinespia site. No doubt they will go fast and crash that site.

I've gotten a lot of flack for writing about how the show doesn't fit the graveyard location and it be better if The Walking Dead had it's season premiere there instead. To all of you who disagree, I still hope you have a fun time. I know you're sad your show is ending and that's why your lashing out. You'll always have it on digital release.

For those who can't make it, that sucks for you.

Gamy Hype: Lost Planet 3 Series of Logs, Nintendo 2DS

Capcom just released Lost Planet 3 and I just got my copy for review. I've been playing for a few hours and it's so weird after playing Dead Space 3. It's like the games were made at the same place with some slight changes. Lost Planet 3 already is more fun with NPC dialogue that only men and women stuck on an ice planet could say. I'll have short logs about it after playthroughs. Right now it easily beats the boredom of Dead Space 3.

Oh, yeah! Capcom Booth at PAX Prime booth #3217. They always have stuff to giveaway and some good photo ops.

BOOTH ACTIVITIES:
Play the latest releases and upcoming games including: DuckTales: Remastered, Lost Planet 3 and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies. A themed Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate lounge will be dedicated to all things Monster Hunter – demo stations, a seating area with charging stations for hunters to join up and quest, special tournaments and photo opps with a life-size model of a Great Sword. Fans can also get their photo alongside Phoenix Wright in a recreation of the courtroom or pose as Strider with a replica of his infamous Cypher weapon.

The Nintendo 2DS? I'm not sure what Nintendo is thinking with this new iteration of the 3DS with no 3D capability and forever stuck open. It comes out in October at $129. The Wii U drop in price in September to $299.

Wii U Tour Hollywood and Highland Until Sep 2

The Wii U Tour is ending, but it's ending in LA. Be sure to check it out before it's gone after this weekend. Plenty of demos to play and chances to win prizes. You can have your photo taken in a Mario World setting.

2013 L.A. County Fair

Woo-wee! It's time for the LA County Fair out in Pomona. Be ready for local news to send reporters they don't like out there for filler stories. Hello, American traditions through local fairs or in other words GIVE ME PIE AND JUNK FOOD!

LA County Fair
Aug 30-Sept 29 Random dates check their site
1101 W. Mckinley Ave.
Pomona, CA 91768

The fair has a many different activities to get lost in. A bunch of carnival rides and games, music, horseracing and a grand pavilion shopping center of 600 vendors.

Pig racing looks to be funny as hell to watch and one of the sports where the loser could easily be eaten. The won't do that, but it be so dark if they did.

The theme of this years fair seems to be inconsistent images and someone who got their son a quick an easy job to cram Photoshop on to the LA County Fair page.

They have Star Trek: The Exhibition up from when it was held at the geodesic dome at the Queen Mary years ago. It doesn't look like it has been updated to account for the new movies. It's an extra $5 to go see.

Start Trek Day at the Fair
Sept. 14, 2013
Free Fair Admission 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. for guests in Star Trek attire
Asian Festival (Sept. 27-29)

No info, but I assume 626 Night Market would just run it for them.
