Weekly What To Do: Watching Movies Over The Dead Is Weird

Just a heads up, because we're not posting it every week, but both outdoor movie series Street Food Cinema and Eat|See|Hear start this Friday. Both use multiple locations around LA, feature live music and food trucks. Cinespia is also up and running, you can watch non-horror movies in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, because weird. We really don't care to see films in a graveyard unless they're horror related, it doesn't make much sense. If you have friends that go, do call them out on it for being weirdos.

"I saw Singin' In the Rain outside, recently,"

'Oh, where?"

"The graveyard."

"Okay, I'm leaving now."

Cinespia, where people watch movies over the dead.

Watch an anime girl and her anime crew come to life with 3D technology. The vocalist isn't a real girl and the sounds she makes are like a techno dolphin calling its friends. We're not sure we recommend if you don't already know Hatsune Miku and her brand of Japanese techno that's like putting a talking robot in front of a fan. It's techno J-Pop with a live band and digital vocalist with auto-tune set beyond high.

The Chinese wuxia (martial arts) picture was never the same after writer/director King Hu’s legendary and tremendously influential Dragon Inn. During the Ming dynasty the emperor’s loyal minister of defense is framed by a powerful court eunuch and executed, and his family is exiled to the remote desert outpost Dragon Inn. Secretly, the eunuch orders his top assassins to meet the children at Dragon Inn and kill them. Soon after the eunuch’s men take over the inn, mysterious traveling swordsman Xiao (Shih Chun) arrives and repeatedly outsmarts the assassins, deflecting charging soldiers without bothering to stand up from his dinner, often using an umbrella in place of a sword, dazzling friend and foe alike with his disarming smile. Next to arrive are the brother and sister (the sister masquerading as a boy, but a better swordsman than her rash younger brother). Soon the stage is set for a life-and-death struggle for justice and survival, showcasing swordplay, arrows and martial arts. This thrilling milestone of film history returns to the screen in a new, beautifully restored 4K digital transfer, created from the original negative. (Fully subtitled)
